He laughed at my reaction and from that moment on, I was traumatized away from that aquamarine (or whatever shade that was) bag for about 20 years. I tried them again in my late 20s now and fell in love with them. At one point, I ate so many of them that my tongue developed blisters.
It really was just the shock of it and expecting a regular potato chip. I would have otherwise liked them because I ate pickles, Lucas candy, and all kinds of sour stuff fairly often as a kid.
