Abrams had a three movie treatment, even after they brought on Johnson. Daisy Ridley even said in an interview that Abrams came to the second movie with a whole bunch of notes and things he wanted Johnson to carry forward so that the third movie plot would make sense, and by her own words Johnson chose to use literally none of it. It's even worse than nobody trying to plan out all three movies.
