These all seem reasonable.

I got major characters by including anyone that fits any of these roles: Defense, Rival, Assistant, or Detective. I added The Judge, removed the Paynes, and removed some of the more minor assistants (Grossberg, Maggey, Teneiro). Doing it by # of appearances leads to some weird circumstances, since AA loves their cameos. Here's the minor characters that show up in at least 3 separate cases in the series (this is counting sprites-only):
