But is college essential to one learning those "fundamentals"?not necessarily, but the unfortunate truth is that a lot of places won't consider hiring you if you're self taught and don't have a really solid portfolio. idk about engineering, that's how it is with programming. I'm self taught and I spent years applying without anyone calling back. then I spent two years building a portfolio of projects and started to get calls from places I applied to, and eventually a job. idk what I'd recommend to someone starting out. I feel pretty ambivalent about college, but it is true that a lot of places won't even consider applicants who do not have a degree, so it might be a necessary evil for some fields (even if people can become very competent programmers or something else on their own) --- ? ...
