Installing proprietary graphics drivers is pretty painless, where as that can be a nightmare on some distros. I'd actually recommend installing a virtual machine and trying a bunch of distros. After reading through the thread I was actually surprised to see Mint being maligned so much. It's a fantastic distro for a Windows user to dip their toes into Linux.
