No matter how much we slice it or develop better green tech, our numbers keep increasing, so any gain is lost by the newborns growing up and consuming resources.

Moving off Earth allows us to consume the resources not from Earth (ie: Moon, Mars, asteroid belt, etc).

And thus we stop depleting Earth.
At our current level of efficiency on materials there's a significant chance attempting to colonize another planet would just trigger a tailspin for Earth. We aren't even at the point where we can utilize non fossilized fuels because we're too concerned about "economic impact" and protecting oil billionaires. There's virtually 0 chance as we are we successfully get off Earth for a proper large scale mining or colonization effort.
