Donald Trumps promise to put a 25-per-cent tariff on all goods imported from Canada is reportedly on hold, with the U.S. president backtracking on a promise he repeatedly made in the lead-up to his Monday inauguration.
Instead, Mr. Trump will issue a memorandum today that directs the U.S. government to study trade policies and evaluate trade relations with China, Canada and Mexico, according to the Wall Street Journal and Reuters.
The executive memo will direct federal agencies to study two issues that Mr. Trump has railed against for months: trade deficits the U.S. has with many countries, including Canada, and the currency policies of other countries.
