Topic | Getting to the end of FF6... not my favorite FF (spoilers) |
Jabodie 02/24/25 10:56:14 PM #1: | It is primarily because I like to play JRPGs as a completionist, but this game is clearly not meant to be played that way. A fair amount of annoying side quests and bestiary entries (deathgaze, cursed shield, gau, coliseum, a bunch of random rare encounters) and lots of missables. I've decided on abandoning Gau completion, since it is very complicated. I intend to be theoretically able to compete the rage list, but I will not finish. The characters seem very unbalanced as well. Sabin is very effective with little effort and investment, but somebody like Setzer seems to need some kind of special setup. My party comp seems to be feast or famine - 1/2 of the cast destroys, the other barely gets by. The large cast has a similar issue as Chrono Cross, where character development is spread very thin, especially in the WoR. In WoB, each character was reasonably well fleshed out and had a nice character setup, but I have found most of the WoR arcs very lacking and disappointing. I see this as a sacrifice for the nonlinear story and large cast, but it does not land for me. Part of this is how I approached the game. If I ever replay this game, it will be with thorough disregard to the annoying side content and missables. It seems things in this game are sort of meant to be missed, and the back half of the game is more about a nonlinear romp to gain power as it see for for the ending. Of the six games in the pixel remaster, 6 has probably been the most mixed for me. However, if I played this game more how the design seems to want me to (follow various threads at my whimsy, explore the WoR and discivet6 for its own sake), I bet I would have had a better time. --- <insert sig here> ...
