The ONLY reason taxes exist is to make people pay for things they don't want to. If people wanted to pay for it, they would pay of their own volition already (in a free market). I don't agree with this actually, at least not fully. Taxes, like most government actions, are a solution to the prisoner's dilemma on a massive scale. I'm happy to pick ally, but without collective action I'd be screwed by everyone picking to betray. The government is basically changing the payouts so that betray has a worse value than ally when it comes to things like paying for public services, following health regulations, etc, where it's in any individual's best interest to not pay for things, but if everyone pays into it things are better for everyone overall. So yeah, taxes do force people to pay for stuff they don't want to pay for, but that doesn't mean that everyone who pays taxes is being forced into it.
