Do not associate your Google account with the phone until AFTER getting through customs.

Create an all new, clean-slate Google account to use the phone initially. Once through customs, do a factory reset of the phone, then login to your normal Google account.

(You don't want both your clean-slate account and your regular account on the same device, ever. For Google will auto-associate the two with each other.)

I forgot to add that it's best if you buy the phone as part of a prepaid service that isn't linked to your real telecommunications provider.

That way, they can't call your service provider and ask for your real number, then ask why you aren't using it. Followed-up with a "We're going to hold you until we get your data records from your real number. That way we can see your real email address and social media accounts."
