There's no rational defence for it in a world where we have ready access to soap and clean water, but it's so common and normalized that people can't help but resist the idea that their parents did something wrong to them. So you just end up with people shouting rational arguments at people that shut down when faced with rational arguments on the subject and therefore shout right back that there's nothing wrong with it. --- This is my signature.
