TopicI hate Age of Empires, and am fully willing to admit it's a skill issue.

Which Age are you talking about? There are 4 of them, and play quite different in aspects like queueing (AoEIII is unique in that all civs can train units in batches of 5). But for most of the series, units can be queued up, but train 1 at a time, although various techs and civs can modify that.

Anyways, I love the AoE series. I grew up with it, and I credit it for spawning my lifelong love of history and anthropology.

it's extremely macro oriented, even among RTS games. definitely sorta hard to get into, but it's not as reflexes-based as starcraft or the others
Indeed, which, among other reasons, is why I always liked it than other RTS games. After all, the "S" being strategy always felt like an after thought in games like Starcraft, where who has the fastest micro-input tends to determine who wins, which really feels to miss the point. A game where you can build fortifications, make it through all the ages and upgrades, and be decided by better macro tactics always made more sense to me in terms of how RTS games SHOULD play.

See also stuff like Sins of a Solar Empire, but that's a whole different beast.
