Because at the time it was hard to fathom package logistics that would be able to keep up with deliveries on the scale we see today. With the postal service mostly delivering letters and e-mail effectively replacing most letters, the idea of e-mail making the postal service obsolete wasn't too far-fetched. --- This is my signature.
