He weaponizes grievance and bigotry, while granting capital free reign. He mirrors and validates the simple minds and desire for simple solutions many have. By bucking political taboos, publicly relishing the pain of his enemies, backing "his people" to the hilt, and railing against cultural elites, he gets to paint himself as anti-establishment and for the "common man."

All of that is a very effective mix. It works because people don't have class solidarity and because the rest of our politicians are garbage and can't/don't want to use the methods that would actually work against this.
