I think Nintendo characters are just treated like theatre actors that can sort of play any role Nintendo wants them to play to tell any story. It is hard to tell what is going on with any character because it can change so much from game to game. Peach can suddenly decide she isnt going to be rescued anymore and thats that apparently, and Pauline kind of seems like the next romantic interest again

and then shes the singing kid companion to Donkey Kong in Bananza and thats fun too. Nintendo is unpredictable.
