Humans don't like having to share dominance. We couldn't even live in peace with other human species (just ask the Neanderthals). There've been about 16 different human "races" throughout (pre)history, and precisely one of them is still alive.

We are still part Neanderthal. Sure there was conflict and mass eradication, but also intermingling. (Also, I feel like attributing Neanderthal extinction mainly to modern man is a bit of an exaggeration)
