Centrists and apoliticals now: "Why is there so much division? Both sides need to come together to understand each other."

Basically. I don't see it as a mask-off situation but it's a stupidly naive stance to take. The right has been taught all their lives that democrats and liberals are actually evil people, so they don't want anything to do with you if they know you aren't on their side.
