A lot of that was the direction the industry was headed. Previous online services from Atari, Nintendo, and Sega required some kind of subscription. DLC was mostly free until next gen but it's not like Sony, Nintendo, or even Valve saw what the 360 was doing and hastily added paid DLC support for their stores - it's what developers wanted. Brown and gray dude bro wasn't absent from the PS3 reveal and it was already on the PS2 - it's what consumers wanted.

Meanwhile, Valve showed it was possible to make bank with loot boxes and battle passes. To get around gambling laws they have introduced loot boxes that literally cost $1,000 to get the item.

If Microsoft was that influential then the PS5 would have prioritized generational backwards compatibility.
