Mew's speech to Mewtwo is different in the Japanese version. In the English version, Mew gives a speech about how real strength comes from the heart, whereas in the Japanese version, Mew declares that all unnatural life (ie, clones) are inferior to the originals, and thus should perish

What the hell, Mew. You were supposed to be cool.

Well, I don't know if I'd consider the "dub" better in a case where it completely changes the meaning of the original statement, even if the original statement sucks.

You can change something and have it be better, you know.

What if Mew's original speech was "HEY KIDS GO BUY SOME F***ING MERCHANDISE RIGHT NOW."

Well, you can have it be better in the sense of "that's a slightly less stupid thing to say," sure. But part of the purpose of a dub is to communicate the message of the original language. You don't necessarily have to do a transliteration to accomplish that purpose. You can even change some stuff around a bit, like how Maya loves burgers instead of ramen in the English translation of Phoenix Wright, because you're adapting it for another culture while still retaining the original point, but it'd be stupid if you had Maya go from saying she loves ramen in the Japanese to saying she hates it in English because that's not the original point.

But whatever.

Out of all the ways the Pokemon movie got neutered and censored outside of Japan, this is hardly the worst.

I don't feel it's the job of the dub to communicate the original message. I think it's the job of the dub to make the message more accessible/better to its new audience. You shouldn't keep something the same if it's going to not make sense or offend the new audience.

And I'm pretty sure Mew saying "YOU SUCK YOU SHOULD F***ING DIE YOU FAKER" wouldn't be good.

I'd say that Yu-gi-oh is better dubbed for the most part. The original Japanese versions take themselves too seriously.

Except in this example Mew would have talked about how clones are great in the English version, and how they're superior to the original versions.

Well, it doesn't have to be the polar opposite in order for the message to be changed. That was just the first example that came to mind.

"Real strength comes from the heart" and "Clones suck kthnxdie" are two different messages.

Edit: Although I suppose if he had said "Real strength comes from real hearts," that would be somewhat acceptable, albeit a bit too Kingdom Hearts-ish.

It depends on how acceptable the message is to a culture, I guess.

Like, any messages promoting the idea of inferior beings existing would get s*** on by an American audience. That just doesn't fly in this country.

For all I know, the Japanese are more accepting of a "know your role and shut your mouth" moral.

Right, but the example you used DID use the polar opposite. So that was the insinuation.

Besides, this thread isn't about how dubs should translate the messages of their original tracks, it's about how dubs can be better. And I think in this case the dub is objectively better.

Well, I was arguing whether a dub could really be considered "better" if it changes the meaning entirely.

But hey, to each his own. MGS has always been better in English, so I'm not sure why this topic needs to be made 15 years after we already knew this.

Not to mention you'd think a topic like this would have been made somewhere when the actual movie came out.

Anyway, once again, MGS proves points and ends minor arguments. All is right with the world.

I can think of a counter example, unless we have different standards for the word "meaning."

*Fire Emblem 9/10 spoilers, because mods*

In the Japanese version of of the story of FE9/10, the Black Knight's loss to Ike in their duel was excused by a malfunction of his warp powder that he uses. The process screwed up and teleported his body but left his soul behind, weakening him significantly and letting Ike get the upper hand. Sound's stupid because it is stupid.

Which is why the localization team changed it so that the Black Knight let Ike win, because Ike lets it slip that his father had slashed the tendons in his sword hand and effectively nerfed himself. The detail of the Black Knight wanting to best Greil always existed, and the Black Knight never knew this. The translation incorporates this into the story by having him throw his match with Ike in hopes that he will grow to surpass his father in strength, and duel his master by proxy.

Which do you think is the better version? Certainly neither of these are at all alike.

I know that a lot of people haven't played either of these games, but I hope you get the point.
