Shocking news: 90% of people think Brawl is the best game in the series.
This is very far from the truth.
Brawl does tend to get a lot more flack on the internet, as opposed to IRL. But Melee is still the favorite of many, particularly older gamers who can still recall the sheer impact that it had. Few games have ever been as universally loved; even the most stubborn Halo fanboys had to admit that it was good.
Also, bear in mind that Melee likely has a higher playrate.

Well as a guy in the middle of the competitive Brawl scene as it's in its death-throws it seems like Brawl wasn't well-received for the long-term.
When you hear more about it being a "disaster" than high-quality, yeah it's real easy to assume the consensus is more negative then positive. On the Internet, Melee is the favored game these days. That's where my comment stems from: the Internet, not the Nintendrones who are gonna buy it regardless.

if brawl is bad for competition there's little reason to believe SSB4 will be any different, sakurai doesn't want people playing smash competitively and nintendo as a company are against it as well, it's been a slow painful death since then but nintendo refusing to allow MLG to stream brawl pretty much killed any future the game had.

I wonder what they'll add in SSB4 to keep the returning characters fresh. Melee added side+B moves, Brawl added Final Smashes, what's next?
My hope is that certain characters are re-worked. Ganondorf deserves to be more than a Falcon clone, for example. I'm okay with Lucas and Ness having essentially the same specials since their A moves are totally different. They REALLY need to get rid of LANDMASTERS, at least for Falco and Wolf. In fact, no two characters should have the same final smashes IMHO

I doubt we will get anything. Sakurai only finished Kid Icarus a few months ago. Nintendo likes to spend a year with a few people just messing around and seeing what works before making the actual game (ok so it probably isn't developed by Nintendo, but still). I'd wait till next year.

It's one of the highest selling games on the Wii, which means a lot when you consider both how high Wii and current generation software sales have gotten.
It also received better reviews and a highly similar fan reception. People really overestimate the vitriol it gets from hardcore Melee fans. It has its haters, but it's times like this when we need to remember that vocal minorities are just vocal minorities.
Now if you wanted to gauge which was considered to be better on "which has the least haters" then Melee might win.

wiichuk is actually better for smash than the classic controller in my experience, the sticks on the classic controller are awful, basically third party quality, and are not conducive to the fine movements you usually need. results seem to correlate this, there are a few top players that use the wiichuk, I can only think of one that uses the classic controller
gamecube controller is still by far the best though, it's too bad nintendo is turning their backs on it already instead of recognizing that they had a great thing going
I also said significantly redesigned, the leaked redesign of the U controller still has a ridiculous form and layout, you're really trusting the same gaming media people that gave skyward sword almost all 9s and 10s? LOL

I'd like legit proof of this first, of which I believe there is none. I expected to not like the Wiimote, I just didn't expect to hate it so much.
The Wii duped me though, as I was under the impression that a majority of its games weren't locked into that garbage.
Just having a legit controller wouldn't be enough for me this time without confirmed significant changes to the pad, which I don't see happening.

(Come to think of it just about the only use that Wiimote gets is in the selection page which I'd rather just skip 99% of the time, otherwise its basically in the "old controller" shelf, right next to one of those oldschool gun-things).
Playing MM9/10 on it wasn't really bad though, because they're so simple. I just turned the Wiimote sideways, got rid of the nunchuck, and used it like an NES controller.

Yes, they confirmed the redesign. Seriously, this attitude ticks me off. 'Oh yes, it's going to be terrible, based on my preconceptions of it and the fact that I haven't kept up with the news since Day 1!'. Yes, if you decide to hate something blindly you'll find it terrible regardless of any good parts it might have, no matter how good it is. This isn't surprising.
And no, the good PS2 games are mostly still cheap I think.

While Brawl did outsell Melee, there's two things to keep in mind: Melee's been around longer, and its multiplayer scene was quite a bit larger. Brawl's playrate could be higher, but at any rate, I think it's very close between the two.
It also received better reviews and a highly similar fan reception.
Brawl did receive marginally better reviews. Its Metascore is 93, while Melee's is 92. However, it definitely seems that Melee left a stronger post-release impact. It did a lot better in the 2001 Game of the Year period than Brawl did in '08, even though most would argue 2001 had a stronger slate of games. In fact, Brawl kind of embarrassed itself at the end of '08, as most sites really didn't give it much recognition at all. Remember when IGN gave the Wii GotY Award to ****ing BOOM BLOX instead?
As for fan reception, while Brawl received a very similar reception among Nintendo fans, its reception in the gaming world as a whole was different than Melee's. It just... didn't really rope in non-Nintendo gamers quite as well. Melee managed to really stick with people who typically wouldn't pick up a Nintendo controller, but Brawl's reception in the general gaming community was relatively apathetic in the long run.
Now if you wanted to gauge which was considered to be better on "which has the least haters" then Melee might win.

There are maybe 3 Wii games I ever play out of the 10-12 or so I have (I got 7 of these games for the price of 3 before I even had the system, including a basically free Galaxy), and not one I've bought since getting the system.
I think 4 or 5 of them are still in their original wrapping because I never even bothered to open them either. (Nether has anyone else, for that matter). The Wiimote makes every game I've played with it unplayable or barely playable, so I saw no sense in opening more of them and decided to preserve their value.
I probably should've ebayed this crap a while ago though, and I missed the best time to do it.. Such a waste of money I can't afford to waste again.
Give me a true controller and make most games not dependent on gimmicks, and we'll talk. I put more Gamecube games into my Wii than anything else, and the only two Wii games I've ever used with any sort of consistency are Brawl and Kart, both of which can use a real controller.
So yeah I'm predisposed to hate it due to wasting several hundred on the original Wii.

Assuming it was the last three months, yes, Iwata was super straight and said they were doing redesigns, pics were posted, the whole nine yards. Even if you don't believe the word of mouth about how it was super comfortable (I've spoken with several people who got to try out the controller, and they told me it was great, so it isn't exactly hazy rumors), that it's getting redesigned is a fact.
In my experience its actually rather hard to even beat computers in Smash with the WiiChuck.
standard controls are terrible but if you map them well it's not bad, I used to use this
tap jump off
Z - shield C - special
d-pad - smashes A - attack B - jump A+B - special 1/2 - grab
only thing I really lose with this is instant neutral air/out of shield and it makes B reversals really difficult because pressing a button with your left trigger while inputting directions makes it less accurate especially with that very light controller...it's also more time consuming to wipe your hands of sweat, I always had to use almost the whole platform invincibility time to do that. I played MK, marth, and snake and my MK and marth were fine with this, I can't play snake with wiichuk at all though

You realize that more than 100 or so people play Brawl, right? The competitive smash scene is an even worse sample than gamefaqs.
That being said, most all of my friends like Smash 64 or Melee better than Brawl, but that's probably because of nostalgia rather than gameplay mechanics, because like 99% of smash players, they don't give a **** about gameplay mechanics.
