ideally i would like someone who doesn't buy and play every single new pokemon game to respond
i'm aware that the general formula is still the same but that didn't stop the terrible dragon quest 2 from turning into the great dq8 and dq9. do the improvements to pokemon since blue/silver make it worth buying one of the newest games? if so, which game? what are some of the improvements?
I mean, how much do you enjoy the Pokemon formula? It hasn't changed (as you said) and none of the improvements are #gamechangers if you weren't a huge fan in the first place.

i dunno, i haven't played a main line pokemon game in a decade. that's why i gave the dragon quest example. going by dq2 i would say i hate the dq formula but then there's dq8 which rocked.
is there an actual story beyond 'get all the badges' yet? post-game?
you saying you don't think it was the best one yet is pretty worrying though so that alone might decide it
Black/White is a bit more story-heavy than the rest of them, but it just all feel so same-y, it's hard to get into. I guess if you've been so far removed from the series you might be able to enjoy it more. For what it's worth, I think Platinum is the best.

It's easier to get into the groove when you haven't gone near the series in a long time. I played Emerald after five years of not touching the games and it was an absolute blast. Two years later and Diamond/Pearl didn't do as much for me.
Black/White are pretty damn good though. My favorites, most likely. HG/SS are good for a nostalgia rush if you played (and loved) Gold and Silver, but as games themselves they're pretty average.

I'd suggest Black/White since it's the first one to actually try to do something a bit less same-y and nostalgia reliant plot and pokemon-wise. I don't know about best yet, but that I could appreciate.
Mechanics and gameplay don't change much, but that shouldn't bother you especially if you haven't played pokemon in a good while.

Yeah there aren't many changes to the battle system but it's fundamentally very good, requiring very few tweaks.
Regardless, BW > plat > HGSS > dpp of the recent games. BW does some entirely new things, has the best story, and the best set of Pokemon; the individual Pokemon are better than RBY's imo.
Plat is just a very polished, excellent game, and HGSS is great too - it just suffers from some of the basic flaws GS had. It does a lot to arrest some of them, though.
