This was the first luxury hotel I stayed at. They have a dress code in the lobby lol. It was fun to just sit in the lobby and listen to the live piano music and people watch.

It is a super old hotel. It feels like you are on the Titanic.

The funny part about the waldorf though is that the part of the hotel I stayed at (video above) was actually the lower-end part of the hotel. The top few floors are actually a separately managed hotel known as the "Waldorf Towers" which is where the very wealthy/celebrities stay. This is what it looks like:

I am of the opinion that the hotel is just as important as the destination.

Unless the hotel is itself your destination (which is a pretty superficial and cost-inefficient idea), or your destination isn't actually worth visiting (in which case, one must question why you're going), that's pretty hard to justify. Time you spend in your hotel room is time you don't spend enjoying your destination.

We are gonna have to fundamentally disagree on that one.

Ok, here is the thing.

A semi-decent hotel is gonna cost you $100 or more in most destinations worth going to at least.

One that has a good breakfast/brunch etc, is gonna cost you at least $150.

So you gotta ask yourself if your blowing that much money, why not spend a bit more (often as little as $50), to stay at a really nice hotel?

Most offer complimentary food and beverages all day long (you could eat all 3 meals there if you wanted). The better ones, like the one I stayed in SF, has quite good food (giant shrimp for instance...all you can eat).

Usually you can't get such rooms for less then $300, and that is a fairly low price itself (rooms can go up to $800 or so in fact). Most such hotels have memberships you can join to get lower fair etc though.

Basically you can usually find a high end hotel for between $100-200 more, and if your not staying a long time, and are spending a few K on the trip already, it's well worth it in my opinion.

Yea I stayed at the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta on a school trip, and they even gave half of us the nice expensive penthouse suites cuz they took til midnight to get us our rooms.

I thought that was a fancy hotel. I had never stayed at anything g other than one of the 2-3 story motels before.

The most luxurious hotel I've stayed at was one of the Disney ones at Walt Disney World and that was only because I was on a business trip. Usually I'll stay in like 2-star hotels.

I voted mid, but it might be top. I've stayed at the Venetian for a night, not sure if that counts. There were a few other classical high quality hotels, but maybe not at the level of the first option.
