So, I'm playing it blind (or as blind as you can while
Having beat the first, and knowing about Penance and the Dark Aeons) and holy shit dude, these damn Aeon fights are everywhere, and you don't get a choice, once you get close you battle. And die..

Now again, I knew about these going in, so it's ok.

But what about if you never played X before, and you had no idea about these super bosses and Penance?

How many people have just straight quit because they think it's part of the main game, and the bosses just become crazy at endgame.

I mean, one even blocks Besaid, So its very likely one would just believe this is normal course of gameplay.

International is a ton easier than the US version

You can actually farm specific spheres and progress the grid

The original was so stingy on ability spheres that you are pretty much always stock on nodes which you can't unlock

Well, I wouldn't try to fight them at all, so I'd probably be fine. I get what you're saying though but it's hard for me to fathom somehow not recognizing they're optional bosses, even if I were 11 years old like I was when I first played FF7. I had a friend in 6th grade who knew everything there was to know about everything with that game and dollars to donuts he'd have known everything there is to know about FF10 International, too.

If by some cosmic fluke I fell into the despair of belief that the Dark Aeons and Penance are mandatory? I'd probably have quit, aye.

I think you missed my point.

Yes, Expert Sphere grid is easier, and you get far better sphere drops.

Why I said people who played it blind might rage quit is the Dark Aeons. Who don't seem like Secret Bosses at all, especially since one blocks Besaid

You can hold off on fighting them until you can start upgrading the nodes to their full potential, then you pretty much break the game. FFX is pretty much the second easiest broken game after FFVIII.

Not really sure why someone would go back to Besaid if they were playing this for the first time

At least, not until you get the airship, and by then you already know where to go to finish the game

I don't know why anyone would assume this. There's no plot-specific reason for you to go back to Besaid. I think "strong optional monsters appear in previous areas you don't need to progress the story" is a fairly common thing in plenty of RPGs.

Let's make sure folks understand the framing of the question here.

MWC is asking if y'all think you'd rage quit or stick with it if you were first-time RPG players with zero net-checking capability and you ran into one of these bad boys and thought it was a mandatory portion of the game. You're probably a kid, wet behind the ears, still pretending you're a Power Ranger, at the time. How would you react? Would you grind and grind and grind and mash them all into oblivion? Or would you cry and fold and throw the disc into your dog's water bowl?

After you get airship I mean.

And not completely true. If you haven't done the Highbridge event yet, (which isn't near as spelled out as Sin battle) you don't know where to go maybe. And you go
Exploring places, and the walking into a town you hear INFIDELS!

And then you die. So now you reload save. Change some equipment, maybe get some abilities. Come back...

DEAD.

So you farm like 10 levels, and you really really plan out this fight. Create customized equipment for first time. Everything. You are ready for this fight.

One turn. DEAD.

And you snap the disk in half.

Yup. Pretty much this. Maybe not even first RPG. But
One of first. In that say 8-11 range.

Isn't there a third option: Give up on going back to Besaid, try progressing the plot the way you're supposed to, and notice that things are no longer one-shotting you?

Here's what I remember (the PAL version is the International version.)

Oh I need to return to Zanarkand since I missed the item I need to make Tidus's (or Yuna's) best weapon. The FAQ doesn't mention anything special.

*Dark Bahamut appears and kills the party.*

WTF!? Oh well I guess I have to rely on the Aeons to beat the final boss... Hmm ok back to the Ice Temple since I missed the item there and I need it to get Anima and can't get the Magus Sisters without Anima.

*Dark Shiva blocks the path to the temple.*

ARGH! THIS THE SECOND WORST FF EVER!!

Oh lovely 2007.

0.1%

that's my number

It's almost incomprehensible to me that someone would try doing something clearly optional, meet a ton of resistance, then figure "well the rest of the non-optional stuff must suddenly get super hard too, I guess I'll just give up rather than actually taking five minutes to check on that even though I've already invested 30+ hours in this game up to this point"

It's true you don't have to face them...

It's also true they ambush you so you don't have a choice.

(Huge props to Square though on Dark Ifrit, I wasn't even mad. That was some creative shit...

Oh, you need help finding your kid... sweet sidequest time. Sees down hole. That looks like a Behemoth type. I guess I fight that during this sidequest...

Wait, why did that Al Bhed just do the Yevon prayer.

She smiles and bends down, and pops back up on screen as summoner....

Me "fuck"

Ifrit jumps out and attacks.

Meteor dead
Meteor dead.

Sub in Yuna.

Summon Yojimbo
Pay all money I have.
Pray.
Wakazi....
Fuck.

Dead!!!!

I've now been Ambushed at Besaid
Machalania
Thunder Plains
Mushroom Rock Road (what the hell do the Sisters have to do with Mushroom Rock?)
Tricked into a side quest at Bikenel
And Ambushed at Yunalesca's plinth (luckily I already had Sun Crest)
I know where Yojimbo is cause of the 5 stage battle being famous.
I don't know where Anima is. Don't tell me... lol.

I know I immediately quit FFVII when I left the Gelnika and Emmy was waiting there for me, basically without any hope of dodging him.

Sarcasm aside, I think the 99.999 attacks are a pretty good clue that they are optional content, and that maybe you should stay away.

This too.

It's one thing to encounter a boss that's really really hard, but you're obviously supposed to be able to beat them (Seymour on Gagazet maybe if you haven't been grinding?)

When a boss in an optional area immediately destroys you in one-hit, that's a VERY strong clue that you aren't supposed to be going to this place yet.

A lot of us when we were 12 years old back then knew to look up online for RPG guides.

Most kids, if they get stuck, look up on youtube, move on.

Guess 1% of 1% of people with zero online access would quit.

Well, to try and work with this, I'll tell a related story. My first rpg was ff7. I don't know how old I was, maybe 9.

I found the combat super boring, so I fled all random encounters

It was all fine until I hit the wall.

The wall was after nibelhiem/Vincent's Manson. There was this big dumb guy in the mountains that cast trine and (the first time for an enemy in the game) cure 2. The monster could out heal my best damage output.

I think I only had one save file, inside the mountain in a location where I couldn't get back to a town. Basically, I was screwed

So I restarted the game and leveled properly.

Later on, I still didn't know I could hit select to make the triangle indicators hover over interactive objects such as ladders or doors. I could not for the life of me figure out how to get through the Escher painting room in the temple of the ancients

So I saved up my money for the official strategy guide, which just said "go out the other side of the room". This was the last time I bought a strategy guide.

So I convinced my parents to let me use the internet, and I searched for ff7 help. This is how I discovered gamefaqs.

This is the long way of saying in this actual situation I would either 1) restart the entire game if I thought I screwed myself or 2) discover the internet and figure out what I was doing wrong

There are games that I have simply put down because they were too difficult, grindy, or simply inscrutable. Final fantasy games are generally well designed enough not to fall into these pits

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.
