sure its a bit shallow and we don't really know the characters that well (I don't even remember their names)

but it was still damn good

I guess people were expecting too much because it was star wars but still, its a stand alone movie

I watched it for the first time only 2ish months ago. Maybe I should watch it again? I enjoyed it from start to finish if memory serves. What is it about the first 1/3rd that takes away from the overall enjoyment?

Allegedly they don't develop the characters enough and give you a reason to care about them. Especially Jyn and Cassian.

I liked it more than TFA that's for sure.

But that falls in with Prequels > Sequels.

This topic reminds me, it was my in flight movie for my flight from Chicago to Pensacola.

Or what? I would have felt an actual emotion beyond "oh, that's too bad I guess" when they all get slaughtered?

Yes because it's still a Disney movie, and they didn't want you to get too attached and then be overly sad when they all died at the end since they were still trying to go for a more positive ending.

I mean that's just my take on it.

I had a pretty strong hunch they were all going to die by the end of the movie anyway, so I don't know if that prevented me from getting attached to them or whatever, but I still really liked it.

The only character I didn't really like too much was Cassian. Felt a bit generic.

I also wish the big dude with the big gun actually accomplished something big when he was one with the force and the force was with him

I like the characters for what they were.

I also have a hard time thinking of this as one of the Star Wars movies, I can't really compare it. It's another film set in the Star Wars universe. Hence it not being called Star Wars: Rogue One.

This was a big problem I had on my first watch, but on my second I realized that taking out an entire squad of Death Troopers solo is actually a pretty decent accomplishment.
