How can you confidently say your life is 33% over? Maybe your projected life span is 33% over, or you're 33% of the way to 75, but you can't really say that. You might die tomorrow. You might die when you're 100.

I think about this a lot. I'd like to come to the conclusion that your brain dies with your body, and you have no conscious awareness of your non-existence, but at the same time I feel like I am too awesome to not exist in the slightest.

I don't know where i'm at with it now tbh.

I'm 35. Knowing my family history I'm probably over halfway to death. I don't think I'm scared of it. I've been with two people when they died. So I think that helped relieve any fear of the actual event.
I mean I had my hand on them as they breathed their last. It's weird. It's more fascinating than sad. I know that doesn't sound right but I'm not sure how to explain it. It doesn't happen like it does in movies. They don't simply stop breathing. The monitor doesn't immediately flatline. It's slower that that. Like a washing machine slowing down from it's spin cycle.
In both cases it was a relief. For the person dying and for everyone involved. It's peace. So maybe that's also why it's not that scary. But who can really say. I'll only know for sure when it's me on that bed.

Scared of what comes after? Hell yes. I'm pretty sure I'm going to hell.

Exactly. What happens after the death? An entire void where no conscious thoughts exist?

What a coincide. I'm 28, and i was just thinking about death as well yesterday. I was trying to take a nap and my mind just wandered over that thought and i couldn't think anything else. I'm 30 in couple of years, and times goes so fast. I'm way past my prime in no time, and then its going to be even bigger downhill, like starting to get all those old man problems, plus fear of Alzheimer, cancer, eye sight issues, hearing issues, memory issues etc.

I started seriously freaking out. Like i almost could see a fucking timer counting to my death, and then i started thinking how death is just eternal nothingness. When i closed my eyes while lying on my back and thought this is it for eternity, but without having consciousness...

I've been getting thoughts like that too. I worked at a healthcare center for 6 years and saw people pass away, including some good friends of mine who were residents there. I remember seeing a woman that was very close to death, she was over 100 years old. I dunno what to say, I hold religious views so that's a bit more comforting for me but still.

I hate to say yes, I think so. In reality, it's truth. I think when we die, we die, entirely. Maybe not existing at all is the relief. Not knowing we are dead, or existed to begin with, is the peace. Ignorance is bliss?

It's tough.

Immortality would be a fucking nightmare. Everyone you ever know or care for will die for all eternity until you're literally the only thing left until the Earth explodes. And then what? You're floating in space forever, unable to breath or eat. Let's not forget the possibility that you get trapped in rubble, water, lava, etc. You might not think the chances are likely, but you being around forever make those chances really high (if not guaranteed). Same thing with imprisonment. What if you serve a life sentence? What if you are just kept in a chamber forever? What if people discover your immortality and hold you captive forever, doing all sorts of experiments?

You have to understand that as a living thing, the only thing that's guaranteed is death. Obviously you should take practical measures to make sure that it happens later, like eating healthy and staying out of crazy danger, but there's no reason to fear it in an existential way. It's like fearing that your DVD player's lens will burn out so you just never watch any movies.

How does one imagine that though?

The earliest positive memory I have is being lulled to sleep by my mother singing along to songs on my Mother Goose lamp/cassette player combo. I'd be quite content if eternity was similar to that.

Well ideally the immortality I speak of is only that which inhibits naturally cellular death. However if physical destruction can still cause death you're not really immortal anyways, you just might live to be 200 before something kills you.

I'm 36 and yesterday my dad said he thinks my health habits will cause me to not live as long as him. he's 68. Basically he thinks I have less than 32 years left. thanks to depression though, I haven't really found I care all that much, assuming it's true. I'll just enjoy tv, movies, games and comics until I die and worry when I'm dead
