This wouldn't affect me if not for the fact that I'm the older brother of a 9 year old so I end up watching a lot of cartoons

I've been subject to some good ones and some TERRIBLE ones

the CG TMNT qualifies as pretty good, I was pleasantly surprised. There were a few times I actually actively wanted to watch it which is rare

From what I understand, it was pretty much like a blend between modern humor, the original TMNT cartoon, and the comic that spawned it (the first battle against Shredder can be compared, 1:1, to the comic)

Changing stuff is the only way to keep those things fresh, even if it's something minor like a personality swap
(I am talking about "Raphael the leader" thing, the new art direction is indefensible, I want to vomit)

I mean come on, Spider Homecoming came out like half a year ago and pulled the same shit yet people love it anyway

I remember many people being upset from the reveal of the 2012 Turtles too, but look how that turned out (pretty good)

Donatellos missing tooth in particular turned off a lot of people

Donnies tooth was the only issue with the Turtles+Splinter designs from the 2012 series though and this Splinter looks way worse than Donnie missing a tooth!

This feels like they are trying to change as much as they can while still keeping the license which is not the way I would handle a pretty established franchise. Having the art style change in a reboot is expected and while I think it is bad maybe people will get used to it. Making Raphael the leader instead of Leo can be done without swapping their personalities and would be better done as a story arc. They could still do that story but in reverse at some point I guess. I still don't like the weapon changes and I'm sure a lot of that is on me wanting them to always be the versions from the 80's and 90's.

Kids wont have that hangup though and might just love this cartoon. So we may have to get used to Michelangelo running around with a kusari-fundo.(A weapon I would not have been able to name had it not been in the article)

Yeah, swapping the personalities is my biggest complaint. Raph being leader is fine in all seriousness. Could even be interesting... But not if its just going to be Raph acting like Leo and Leo acting like Raph. Whats the point of that? It basically amounts to just switching the colors they wear.

Regarding the weapons, there's a pretty significant portion (like one-third) of the first cartoon series where Michelangelo completely stops using nunchaku and starts using a grappling hook thing as a weapon instead so it's not like this is some cardinal sin either

I kinda like Raphs weapons being changed out for tonfas. As cool as the sais were, he would pretty much never use them that much in a PG show. He can go ham with these tonfas, and I don't see them as too visually different.

Honestly I didn't even notice that Raphael had a different weapon, the tonfas felt totally natural

I think it's great that they change up the character dynamics and stuff, there's no reason to be beholden to those and keep making the same thing over and over again - the art style and character design is just really unpleasant here

I feel like there's a robot chicken sketch waiting to happen where the other turtles are beating up dudes with their staffs and nunchucks and stuff and then Leo just VIOLENTLY BEHEADS some guy and they're all like 'whoa, whoa!' and he's like 'what, it's a sword, what did you think I was gonna do'
