Sure, other games might be better at 1 thing than it. But nier automata is a 10/10 across the board and no game as a complete package will ever beat it
I doubt even if yoko taro teamed up with platinum, square enix and hideo kojima and their hearts aligned or some shit.

I'm the opposite. I thought the gameplay/combat was great stuff but the story and characters were meh. Not bad, but nothing particularly noteworthy either.

sure, it's fast but it also feels very button-mashy. there's not enough variety to the movesets of the weapons and it's basically just 'lock on, hold shoot and stay alive' and you win. i'm not saying the combat is bad by any means, i just felt like it was the weakest link in a great game.

i know that hard mode disables lock-on, which may have made things more engaging.

It does. You also die very fast so its almost as fun as doing DMD/Infinite Climax stuff

I really should've played the game on hard. I played on Normal and didn't die once. No fault of the game itself, I guess I'm just the shit.

The thing that makes hard mode so fun is that in addition to being 1 - 2 shotted by virtually everything, if you wanna optimize your damage output you have to manually aim the pod and keep firing while also comboing and dodging effectively. My only complaint about the gameplay from that perspective is that some weapons are just pointless IMO

This is a shit opinion. I don't care what you find to be the best game of the month, or even year for that matter. Nier Automata is a complete game, with good story, gameplay, side content, and music. In no universe is this a 5, 6, or 7

You literally have to play half the game twice with minimal differences to complete it. The differences are an arcade minigame and little cutscene additions that like to crap out on PC.

I feel my rating of Nier is pretty accurate. If you like it then great but it's still not perfect, at least on PC it had serious technical issues and there are some pretty poorly designed stuff. Just one example is the default control scheme of the game. The constant DPS attack and the dodge are managed by the same finger so you have to either change it yourself or lose damage output when you're in a big fight and really need it :/

I have never insinuated that its a perfect game tho? And I remap controls whenever its available in pretty much every game ever so I never had that problem. I had L2 for pod fire, and R2 for evade so I could dodge, combo, shoot, and control the camera at all times

My condolences that you played the garbo PC port, but you shouldn't really expect better from JP devs

I agree with this. Its something JP devs as a whole need to work on. ArcSys with BlazBlue and Guilty Gear, From with Dark Souls, and Square have all released some janky ass ports despite the gameplay being the meat of the games

It's a good game but I think it's overrated here tbh. I don't even consider it to be the best Platinum game. I think I'd like it more if it wasn't open world. It didn't really add anything to the game for me.

I definitely think MGR:R did the slashy slash stuff better

But the fake open world was pretty annoying. I found difficulty just going from the carnival area to Pascal's Village because of how wonky the camera was and how restricted movement was in that area.

I have a hard time deciding between MGR, DMC4, or Bayo 1 for games that I think have the best gameplay

Honestly I feel like the whole RPG stuff doesn't really compliment Platinum combat that well.

Metal Gear Rising and Bayonetta have much tighter and more balanced combat than Nier and Transformers. Often those fights can become either a grind or a breeze because they need to take that stuff into account. It doesn't help that enemy variety in Nier is a step down from Bayonetta too.

Eh, it's not super necessary. It's like far-flung into the future with only references to the first NieR.

...and if you want to play in order of release anyway you'll have to play the Drakengard games since those are related to the NieR universe.
