That has no bearing on legitimacy.

It fits the definition of a cult more then a religion
As it forces members to cut ties with people who are not part of the organization.

A cult becomes a religion when it gets tax exemption.

But then Zlabiokian is more legitimate to the people in 4,000 because High Zlabob Alibart is still kicking around tropical Antarctica while Hubbard is a mythical figure in the same league as Hercules and Aunt Jemima.

Hubbard isn't really an object of worship. In religious terms, he'd be a preacher or a prophet. And we know that preachers and people claiming to be prophets exist. The fact of their existence doesn't lend legitimacy to their beliefs, though.

I also know Tolkien existed, but that doesn't mean that Middle Earth was ever a real place/time period.

And to be completely fair, we know plenty of other religious leaders who existed (and we have tangible proof or at least documented evidence of such), so that wouldn't even be a point of contention anyway

As the old saying goes, the only difference between a cult and a religion is how many followers believe in it.

Yes, actually - we know Tolkien existed... therefor Middle Earth is MORE supported than most religions

"If we know the liar, that makes his lie more truthful."

We know that the Bible must have had authors who must existed, and compilers, translators and editors who put their own spin on it -- even if we know little or nothing about who they were. Otherwise, there wouldn't even be a fucking Bible in the first place. (Unless you think God writes, prints and distributes it to bookstores himself?) But whether they wrote about the truth is another matter entirely.
