Ok, let's go along with the fact that pit bulls are inherently more violent and aggressive than other dogs.

Does this mean it should be illegal to own them? Why does this apply to dogs but not guns?

Pitbulls are garbage dogs. No matter how good of job you do raising it, it can snap at you at any time for the smallest of reasons. I.e. it could act like the sweetest and most loyal dog for years, and then one day you bump into it when it's eating and it goes ballistic and latches on to your throat.

I don't understand the "shitty owner" argument. There are shitty owners of every dog breed, doesn't change the fact the vast majority of fatal or critical bites on humans are from Pits. Even with some breeds misidentified as Pits it's still a staggering statistic. But people continue to defend those living time bombs, whatever. Don't come crying to me when your "raised right" Pit snaps for no good reason and goes on a family murder spree.

"They used to be known as nanny dogs."

There's a reason people stopped calling them that.

I think most of them aren't any worse than other breeds, but when they snap they tend to do much more damage. There are a lot of dangerous animals that can be domesticated but still pose a great enough danger that it's not worth the risk.

A large portion of it has much to do with people being terrible at identifying dog breeds. Any dog that stands above 2 feet gets labeled as a pit bull after an attack. Doesn't help that there's no actual verified system in place to track which dogs are committing attacks. The organizations that try to only go off of news articles, which are also shit at identifying dog breeds.

That third one is why it's disproportionate for attacks

I see at least a few Facebook posts a year about people having a small yippy dog bite them and the owner runs off or gets mad at the bite victim.

Proof of this 50% stat?

There really isnt except from sites like dogbites.org or whatever its called that collect data from erroneous sources like news sites rather than state by state data bases and the like without actually finding out the breed of the dog. Quite often attacks are mislabeled as pitbull attacks when its another breed of dog.

Ive found pit bulls to be the smartest, most loyal and affectionate breed Ive owned out of my almost 30 years of owning dogs. I actually find shephards, huskies and bulldogs to be more aggressive towards people. The Belgian Malinois, cane corso and presa canario to be the scariest breeds. Just for background I work in a dog based industry so its not simply anecdotal.

you realize that news reports are the only source of info for something like this, right? you are seriously mistaken if you think there are 'state by state data bases' that tabulate the breed of dogs that bite
