Board 8 > What's the worst gaming fandom you've been in?

What I mean is, for whatever reason, the people you encounter in this fandom tend to be toxic - either there's excessive amounts of negativity, posturing over what games in a series they enjoy (with people who enjoy The Wrong Game being excessively shamed) or just people being plain nasty to each other for any reason whatsoever.

You find yourself having to defend your taste in games when it's really none of their business and you just walk away from it all because fandoms suck.

That's the kind of "worst" I'm talking about.

For me, I can easily sum that up with one of my favorite franchises having easily one of most stressful "fan"doms ever. The Star Fox fandom.

You will never meet anyone who hates Star Fox games like the Star Fox fandom. And if you like the wrong game? Oh boy, it's open season on you.

And generally speaking, the wrong game is any game that's not the original Star Fox 64.

Thankfully, there are plenty of mature people out there, but they're pretty scattered.

(Runner up would be the Spyro fandom. Any of them. Pick one and they're all pretty awful.)

I once was part of the Undertale fandom, as it was fledgling and people were generally pretty cool.

Then the Homestucks and Tumblrs jumped on board, and oh boy did that go down a 90-degree vertical.

Left 4 Dead. A friend keeps trying to get me into it. People there are toxic, hate anyone that's not excellent at the game, and often just want to play the same stage again and again and fuck you if you don't like it.

Rocket League is far and away the most toxic gaming community I've ever stayed in for a long period of time.

In general I hate the post-2013 Melee community also, but not for any of the reasons listed in the first post. Smash 4 fits that description perfectly though. I basically quit that game because the amount of fun I had actually playing the video game was not enough to compensate for the amount of displeasure I had with dealing with the people on a regular basis.

I've been lucky and avoided all the real toxic ones. I guess Overwatch would win by default.

Maybe WoW but there were so many people, it was easy to avoid the asshats.

By comparison TF2 was a really great community for the few years I played that.

So for people saying Smash 4, do you guys actually go to events and stuff, or are you just talking about some online Smash forum or something? I don't interact much with the online community, but the tournament-attending Smash crowd is almost definitely the best gaming community I've ever been a part of.

The culture around chess often is horrid and the leading international organization (FIDE) is about on par with FIFA for corruption.

I'm one of those apparently rare fans who actually likes the thing they're a fan of. Fandom seems to be about competing over who despises the object of their fandom the most.

Sonic, Bioware, Star Wars, Star Trek... I enjoy them all, which apparently makes me not a fan.

I don't think I've actually been part of one.

I mostly discuss games here or on discord or what have you. I've done to game-specific places a bit, but not really for any length of time.

Obviously you hear things about this fandom or that fandom, but I never really included myself in any of them. I do count myself as a pretty big fan of, say, Sonic, but I wouldn't say I'm part of that "fandom". I'm just a fan.

Based almost purely on what I've heard I guess it'd be Sonic, but there's a disconnect there for me.

I've noticed this too.

Hell, the Kingdom Hearts 3 forums are full of people bitching about one aspect or one entry in the series, and it's almost never the same one.

Between all of them, you could create a rabid hater of the KH series who hates Disney, Square Enix, and anything remotely fun.

Any iteration. They are the original toxic moba and as bad as League and the like are you don't quite reach the level of rage that will exist in any and all DotA games.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, both FFXI and FFXIV have had absolutely the nicest communities I've ever seen. Total opposite of what you would find in a typical MMO.

I played FF11 for a couple of months last year and I can attest to that.

Even the political chat shit that happens in-game is tame compared to... well, here even.

if that doesn't count hearthstone subreddit is the worst for sure. dark souls fans would be down there among the worst. the fanbase has become less tolerable with each installment in the series (DeS was fine mostly because nobody knew about the games). I will say I exclude Bloodborne from that. Bloodborne fanbase is awesome. although I'm sure there is some big overlap between people who like the games, the people who actively participate in the fandom are different.
