Vault 76 was a control vault so no experiments on the populace. And IIRC the control vaults all opened as soon as the surface was habitable again so this might take place in an interesting time period.

The Vault-Tec terminal in the Citadel lists Vault 76 as a "control" vault, with 500 occupants. The vault was designed to open 20 years after a nuclear war, and was among the seventeen known control vaults, meaning that it was used as a baseline to compare to experimental vaults. It is also mentioned in one of the alien captive recorded logs (no.13) recorded by Giles Wolstencroft, a Vault-Tec official who was abducted while inspecting the vault's construction site. In Fallout 4, the newsreader in the prologue mentions Vault 76 debuting in 2076 in honor of America's tercentenary when discussing Vault-Tec's plans to expand.

I'm not super tied into to the temperature of Fallout, but it seems to me that it's going to take Obsidian making Fallout 5 for anyone to care about it if it's less than 3 years away.

And I don't think Obsidian is all too interested in working with Take Two again

Actually it was a 4chan leak. Same guy who leaked the Pokemon news. He said that Fallout 76 was going to be released this year which was a rust clone.

So, he also had the name correct also.

Rust clone makes sense, being so soon after the bombs fell.

The only thing that gives me hope for this game is that Chris avellone has been teasing he is working on this. Or at least fallout in some capacity.

Also, about obsidian: the company is not what it once was, especially without Chris avellone. New vegas was good because of the writing and it seems all their best writers have left. Instead of hoping for another obsidian fallout, hope for a freelance Chris avellone helmed game. Which this could be.

So, reading stuff. Game's likely set in 2102, based on the date of the Pipboy, so 25 years after the bomb dropped. Also likely set in West Virginia, based on the song, which is still close enough to Washington to be considered part of the Capital Wasteland.

Base-building sounds right and matches with the purpose of the control vaults. Kotaku claims it'll have online, but I'm hoping for co-op, rather than full rust-style PVP. Maybe something like State of Decay 2's online where you have your own settlement and can jump in and help others with theirs? But, y'know, not shit like State of Decay 2's online is.

Like 95% of content is soloable, and the remaining 5% you can auto-match to groups where everything is easy and nobody talks, such that you might as well be playing with bots.

Well, I certainly hope it's not a WoW clone. But I'm imagining that Fallout, specifically, would be PVP, and therefore you'd be griefed constantly.

The person who is reporting its an online game also said it isn't an mmo, so there's that.

Whatever it ends up being, if Chris Avellone is involved and has any degree of creative control, you can bet it will be pretty damn good to outright amazing. At least in the writing, which is where Bethesda has messed up with their games primarily.

One of my co-workers is super into Ark and keeps asking me to get it I've come close a few times but if Fallout 76 is going to end up like that I'll just get that instead because he would get it too
