Persona 3 is still getting stuff related to it, and it came out in 2006.

I didn't realize these games had such huge fanbases. I thought Persona 5 was the one that really hit it big.

Persona 4 is where the series really took off. Persona 3 is definitely the least popular of the three overall, but it's still got a very dedicated fanbase as well.

Did Persona 4 take off in the West specifically, or is it what elevated the series even in Japan?

It's definitely where it took off in the west. I'd imagine that's where it took off overall, too, because Persona 4 had multiple spinoffs, two animes, and a port that added a ton of stuff to it (and is pretty much the reason many--self included--own a Vita).

Persona used to have "Shin Megami Tensei" affixed to its title in the west because Atlus wanted to attach it to a more well known title to help sales. That stopped with Persona 4.

That makes sense, thanks.

For one thing the ending is silly

You can't tell me about all these themes when I am practically fighting a wine glass that had no way to fight back and then turns into some god or something, and then actually kills your party but all the cries of the people that are too far away to even hear revive you and you save the day.

It feels like the first Pokemon movie, and that's not a complement. Sure the themes are there, but it's told really poorly.

The early Persona games were released in America but they got buried. They were fairly popular in Japan though even back then.

P3 was the one that got a lot of attention over here. I don't think P4 was notably more popular, it just kept the hype flowing.

P5 is kind of another major step up though.

P5 was a step up because of P4's success. It's definitely a bigger deal than P3 was. P3 was the game that started giving the series attention in the west, but P4 was the breakout game.

P4 is/was a lot more popular than 3, yeah. It's the game that put the series on the map (worldwide). 3 actually wasn't that successful on release, at least initially.

I know this is a highly unpopular opinion on this board, but I did not like Persona 3 at all. The notion of having to shoot yourself in the head constantly was just disturbing to me for some reason. Also the lights on the elevator to see Igor was so hard on the eyes. I have never gotten a seizure from a video game before, but if I would, it would be from those elevator scenes. Besides those two minor game complaints, I just never could get into the story or gameplay.

Persona 4 and 5 were completely different for me, and are among my all time favorites.

Was Persona 4's breakout success helped by Giant Bomb's Endurance Run? I can never remember if it was the game's popularity that spurred on the ER or the other way around.

I think Giant Bomb definitely helped it, as well as the rising popularity of LPs in general.

which is why it was stupid for Atlus to ban streaming P5 beyond a certain point in the game

It was also rather lazily enforced. You could tell Atlus US had zero interest in actually making sure nobody streamed it past a certain point. Numerous streamers played through the entire game with no problems and I believe most of their twitch VoDs are still up.
