It just occurred to me earlier today when I fumbled trying to name ice cream that isn't soft serve. It occurred to me that I have no idea what "not soft serve" ice cream is actually called, and Google was no help. Does anyone know what it's actually called?

Thank you for trying to legitimately answer, at least. I guess it's technically regular ice cream, but it seems like a lot of people would think you're talking about vanilla instead of un-soft serve.

"Ice cream" is accurate. Unless it's preceded by "soft serve," it's presumed that ice cream is not soft serve. "Regular ice cream" could indeed make people think of vanilla, you're right, but the "regular" isn't needed.

Literally every response was a serious and accurate answer.

It would be like if someone asked what non-cake doughnuts are called, and people just answered "doughnut." It's technically correct, but a smart-ass answer. You know that's not the answer that person was looking for.

Both actually came up in conversation today. That's when we realized we didn't know what "not soft serve" ice cream was called. I guess "regular" would've been clear given the context, admittedly.

You're not knowing the correct answer doesn't mean they're smart ass answers.

They're literally the correct answer.

If someone asked what non-cake doughnuts are called, they're looking for a kind of doughnut (yeast or raised doughnuts), not just "doughnuts." When I asked what non-soft serve ice cream is called, I was looking for a kind of ice cream, not just "ice cream."

i'm not sure why you keep asking.

ice cream is ice cream. are you asking what flavor? there are different flavors of soft serve just like there are ice cream.

there are variations of ice cream including soft serve, gelato, frozen custard, frozen yogurt, etc.

but in the context you're asking it'd just be regular hard ice cream which is just called ice cream.

I dunno'. How many people are going to keep misunderstanding my question? I know it's ice cream. I'm asking what it's called, to differentiate it from other ice cream.

Like bacon. Everyone loves bacon. Usually pork bacon. Calling it pork bacon, instead of just bacon, isn't usually important, but it can sometimes be useful to specify pork bacon if you're talking about different kinds of bacon.

So what is "regular" ice cream? What is the pork bacon of ice cream?

when i worked in an ice cream shop at an amusement park and we served soft serve and regular ice cream we called it hard and soft. so if you absolutely want descriptors to differentiate you could use those.

Ice cream is also the term for soft serve. Often, but not always, modified with "soft serve." And we've already clarified that hard ice cream is another term. Not the most widespread of terms. but it is out there. Now the real question is if there's a term more widespread than hard ice cream.

I don't thnk we "clarified" that hard ice cream is a term. You just refuse to believe that non soft served ice cream is just called ice cream. There most likely isn't a separate term between soft served and ice cream other than ice cream. Because that's what people call it. When I put ice cream in the freezer, it gets hard. You know what people call it? Ice Cream. They don't ask for hard ice cream, because that sounds stupid. It's just called ice cream. And you an called soft served ice cream, too. Depending on a couple of things, people usually know which one you're describing. In what context are you having trouble with describing both of them in a conversation? Maybe you're doing it wrong...

That isn't a real question because it's been answered millions of times. If it took this many posts for you to find out that "hard ice cream" is a potential and very uncommon alternative to saying just "ice cream", I don't know how many more it'll take you to realize that there is no other "widespread" term.

Ffs it's like you're planning on writing a thesis on the elusive terms of non-soft serve ice cream. Or you're just grade-A trolling, which I will admit you're doing a great job of if true.

If I'm trolling, I'm so good that I didn't even know it! I got myself good!

Like seriously, I made this thread because of a weird conversation earlier about ice cream, both soft serve and hard, and it came up that we didn't know what hard ice cream was called. I thought this would be a fun little thread and maybe someone out there would know of the term used. I never expected this thread to blow up the way it did, like I thought it would just be a little thread that might get answered if I was lucky. Instead it turned into a mess with most people being as deliberately unhelpful as possible, which I guess happens sometimes on this board, but I mistakenly believed this thread was benign enough to avoid that fate. Turns out that people take their ice cream very seriously.

I know it's called ice cream. Telling me that it's called ice cream is entirely unhelpful. I was asking what it's called when you want to make the distinction between hard ice cream and soft serve ice cream.
