I started it not long ago but I just wasn't feeling the first world at all. A lot of little things about gameplay and exploration were annoying and the overall direction seemed tedious. It gave me a similar disappointed feeling of not living up to SM64 or Banjo as Yooka-Laylee did, only A Hat in Time was way less polished so I didn't stick with it. Still, there's a good chance I just don't care for the genre anymore.

I dislike you, OP. I was doing so well with the mid-summer sales and not buying a bunch of stuff I wouldn't have time for...and now this.

Oh, and apparently I have a code for Lara Croft GO that I don't need, if anyone wants it.

this is kind of how I felt but I chalked it up to "maybe I just don't feel like playing a platformer right now." I'll try it again later.

I really enjoyed it. There are some places where you can really tell there was a limited budget, especially in the animations, but all the things you want a platformer to be good at, it does extremely well.

Exactly this but I stuck with it and it turned out to be one of my favorite games in a long time that I easily 100%'d with absolutely no hesitation

It is a very very very strange game. It's unpolished. The graphics kinda suck. The controls suck. The camera really sucks. The main character is boring and mildly cute at best. It's weak in everything that a platformer traditionally needs (3 Cs, controls, camera, character).

But my god is it so much greater than the sum of its parts. It's downright scary. I attribute it to the 4th C: content. The stuff in the game is just really good. It's impossible to describe but you will feel it by the end of world 2.

The controls are fine, and Hat Girl is way more than "mildly cute", but I'm with you on everything else. I would say there are 2 throwaway time pieces in the whole game, and everything else feels unique and worthwhile to play.

Mario, Banjo, Sonic, hell even Croc and Toy Story 2 back in the day

But a Hat in Time was just...mediocre
I don't know how to explain just what was missing, but it just lacked some polish

Ultimately they all come down to busywork collecting, sure, but most of them feel a bit more organic. Finding a jiggy in Banjo or earning a red coin star in SM64 was a natural result of exploration and figuring stuff out. That time piece in A Hat in Time was literally 'here are lines to three places, go there and then here'.

I also admit that I never made it past the first world so I don't know if its design improved at all.

So apparently I didn't finish the first world last night. Silly me, I thought there were only four "stars," and then there turned out to be almost twice that number, and at least one was something I couldn't do.

Played through parts of worlds 2 and 3. Lots of charm, but man, I do not care for world 3. Also, there's a few too many stealth levels for my liking. Sneak through the studio. Sneak through the train. Sneak through the haunted manor...one of the things I liked about Mafia Town was that I had this area to explore and I kept returning to it for different things. That was one of the facets I loved about Mario 64. I feel like that's been completely absent from the other worlds.

This is why going back to world 1 after playing the rest of the game gives you a huge appreciation for it

But also, world 3 is deceptively open and explorey

Yeah world 3 is actually a lot like the others once you start to take down the fire walls; you realize it's been all connected the whole time. 2 is really the only one with completely separated areas come to think of it.

Well, I "beat" it. I only finished world 2, and never entered world 4, but I had access to the end and figured I'd take a peek. Dive-bombs make that fight so much easier.

Anyway, I haven't finished world 1 because there's a stage that I apparently still don't have something I need, and I haven't finished world 3 because one of the rifts is behind the green flame, which won't go away no matter what I do. I also have no idea what the Mumble Badge does, but I bought it as soon as I could because I figured it'd be used in some key moment later, and I have yet to see it have any consequence whatsoever.

My mac was free through my graduate program. I gave my PC laptop to my brother when his broke. My stipend is so low I qualify for food stamps. So yes I am annoyed about 12 bucks, way to make some grand assumptions.

That said I got it to work by just having the controller mimic keyboard and mouse.
