Let's say a species advanced enough to traverse the universe stopped by our planet and they happened to be benevolent. They basically just roam the universe to explore and help younger species advance.

So they come to our planet and bring FTL travel, medicine so advanced that human life spans are effectively extended to thousands of years, technology that eliminates hunger/poverty, etc, and they roll it out for us to use all within a year.

That would be pretty incredible, but I always remember a warning from Stephen Hawking that realistically any alien species advanced enough to find us would probably simply colonize us for materials and labour.

What would that do to race relations? Or nation relations between nations at odds like Pakistan and India? What would happen to our psychology once we realize that we're all now going to live healthy and happy lives for thousands of years before we have to worry about death or decay?

Eh, I'm more optimistic. Any civilization that could cross the galaxy to hunt for resources like that would've solved resource issues through other means, like dyson spheres for energy and some crazy atomic manipulation for conjuring up matter they need and etc.

Damn. That looks really good. I'll have to watch that soon. Can't say it will change my stance, though. We have a single reference point for a species advanced for a even a level 0 civilization. Hell, who even knows if the Kardashev scale is an affective assessment of civilizations.

What ended up happening was the benevolent alien race gave the primitive people all the cool technology and they used it to kill each other and blew up their own planet so hard it actually fucked over the aliens that gave them the technology in the first place.

I am honestly not a Stargate fan and so any episode I ever seen of it was pure coincidence, but that particular episode really made an impression on me and has influenced a lot of my creative writing / stories.

definitely watch it, once of the best sci fi films in recent times. Annihilation is also really good
