I remember in the first movie when you're just about to see Godzilla and the MUTO clash in Hawaii, but it immediately cuts away to Elizabeth Olson and her son watching it for one second on TV. When a bad motherfucker like that shows up and roflstomps your planet, what can you do but fight fire with fire and turn them loose against him? If he's not from Earth, but they are, and they are our planets defense, they should see him as the greatest threat. Again, that last scene in the trailer shows a whole lot of air power moving in behind Godzilla - they're not fucking with him, and he's not blowing them out of the sky like he would if he recognized them as the threat.
