I played the original this past week and was really underwhelmed. The world was empty besides the same five random events popping up occasionally, missions were repetitive and boring, the story felt really disjointed etc.

The story in particular was really bad. You have John withholding info from other characters about why he's doing what he's doing, which in turn withholds the info from the player which makes no sense because it's information the playable character knows. Should I kill this Javier guy? I don't even know who he is. Then there was stuff like when 2 missions were available but if you chose to do them in the wrong order one mission would make a reference to the other despite those events not happening yet. It was really sloppy.

Hopefully the sequel is better but the massive hype for it is confusing to me.

It...doesn't? What are you even talking about? No games from 2014 to 2016 are even close to the top 10 besides re-releases.

i mean, not anymore. i feel like i see a lot of games get this sort of response on review release day, then gradually slip. i may be exaggerating how often it happens but i take day 1 reviews with a grain of salt when it comes to how the game will be perceived in general.

Breath of the Wild and Oddysey last year were both top 3 and 5 till they changed their ratings structure to absolutely annihilate Nintendo....

Reminder that Galaxy and Galaxy 2 slipped spots 10 and 7 years after their release to other games that are already out as well. As did virtually every Nintendo game on there.

Its a sequel to a consensus top 3 game last gen and top 5 of the decade doesnt seem far off

RDR1 is in my top 5 fave games. Hopefully this one can be up there as well. Already got the game downloaded and ready to go at midnight!

Game Oscar-bait is a lot harder to pull off than film Oscar-bait; and the point of actual film Oscar-bait is that they are films that cut corners and then shoehorn in certain themes to appeal explicitly to the Academy member. Video game journalists in general seem a lot more in-sync with the average gamer than an Academy member is to a film-goer.

I'd probably be all over this game, but I never played the original. Also, every time I see the Gamerankings top 10, I am reminded that there is a literal 5/10 game GTA IV in that bunch of masterpieces.
