I think 15 character limit would be a good guideline for determining if a character's name should be shortened. More than 15 characters means the name should be shortened. I checked the jsfiddles for the guru contest to make sure. Indeed he only appears as Ren in later rounds. However if you look at your bracket now, it now says Joker in Round 2. So there's a chance that the name that will appear underneath the match pic will be Joker.
