You do realize this has nothing to do with why he's threatening to shut down the government, don't you? Also, you don't WANT the government to shut down, that's not really a good thing.

Exactly. Its because hes being denied over payment of his wall, which he wants the US government to pay for.

He's doing no more and no less than Obama did when the budget refused to fund his project. And, thanks to Obama's shenanigans, the odds of a shutdown are probably relatively low because they're more likely to work through it since one president broke the government already.

Anyone else remember that time when good old Barry closed the government down for half a month and withheld pay from government workers so that he could tax people for not having healthcare?

Since TC just likes to be a troll (a la most PotD Canadians >_>)

Watch the meeting between Trump, Schumer and Pelosi:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZtCfBR8ZZQ" data-time="

https://twitter.com/cnbcnow/status/1072546369951465472?s=21

I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Trump told House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) during a contentious, 17-minute exchange inside the Oval Office.

I will take the mantle, the president added. I will be the one to shut it down, I'm not going to blame you for it.

Source: https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/420782-trump-democrats-battle-over-wall-in-oval-office-spat

GOP leaders were left cringing by Trumps vow to take responsibility for a partial shutdown and his promise not to blame Democrats.

Asked if he had seen the exchange on television, Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas), said, I did, unfortunately. I wish I didnt.

Senate Republican Conference Chairman John Thune (S.D.) threw up his hands when asked about his reaction.

I heard it was very entertaining television, he said.

Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), who urged the president in a private meeting before Thanksgiving not to shut down federal agencies over the border wall, said he would have handled it differently.

Ive never said that myself. Im always trying to work to fund the government, he said.

Shelby said Trumps comments heightening the likelihood of a shutdown.

I think its a step in that direction, obviously, at least [with] the rhetoric, he said.

Sen. Pat Leahy (Vt.), the senior Democrat on the Appropriations Committee, said hes never seen a spat play out so publicly at a senior-level White House meeting during all his years in Congress.

Ive only been here with eight presidents, said Leahy, who was elected to the Senate in 1974.

Somehow hes made up his mind that it will make him look good to have a Trump shutdown but a Trump shutdown costs taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, creates havoc and does nothing for border security, he added.

The reality is that the Republicans still have a majority in the House until next year. Even with their control over the legislative branch, the Republican members of Congress likely won't have enough votes for a spending bill that includes line-item funding for a wall. They wouldn't need to, or likely would even bother to spend time trying to rope in Democratic members to support it otherwise.

So yeah, Trump says he'll claim full responsibility if both houses of Congress do pass a budget without that spending item, they place it in front of him to sign into law, and he refuses to sign it.

Well, Republicans have already shown that they can shut down the government, be blamed for it, and still not get voted out, so it's not surprising that holding the country hostage over their stupid pet projects is firmly in their playbook now.

Except this is different, because Pelosi and Schumer got Trump on camera saying he'll shut down the government AND take all the blame for it. They played Trump like a cheap fiddle, because he's just that fucking stupid.

My favorite part was when Schumer mocked him straight to his face, and he was too stupid to even realize it.

Why does he need to secure funding from US tax payers?

He repeatedly stated Mexico would pay for it. If Im Schumer or Pelosi, thats all I would say every time he asked for the money. You said you would get it from Mexico.

Its like when he was in the USFL and tried to convince the other owners in the league to pay the contract for the qb he wanted (Doug Flutie) because by signing Flutie to the USFL, Trump claimed, everybody would make more money.

But it's the same side doing it. Republicans refused to pass a budget to fund Obamacare, and now Trump (nominally a Republican) is threatening to refuse to pass a budget that doesn't fund his border wall boondoggle.

Because he literally said, "I am proud to shut down the government for border security. I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down, I'm not going to blame you for it.

Also because there is a bipartisan budget bill with enough votes to get through Congress, but Trump indicated he will not sign it.

No, last time it was the Tea Party wing of the Republican party refusing to vote for a budget bill for a program that had already been signed into law and ruled as constitutional by the Supreme Court. Republicans in Congress held the whole thing hostage because they were throwing a temper tantrum.

This time, the budget bill has enough votes to pass Congress, but Trump has said he won't sign it unless it has money for his wall in. This despite the fact that two bills with full funding for the wall failed in the House earlier this year, where no Democrat votes were necessary (meaning Trump doesn't even have enough *Republican* support to build the wall).
