It seems to me that this country has lost its sense of identity; it no longer feels like a national community.

It has mutated into a gladiatorial arena, a battleground where corporations compete for profits in a merciless zero-sum game, where everything is reduced to winners and losers, and where, unfortunately, the federal labor laws are so weak they practically guarantee that the workers will always be the losers.

If you think today is bad, you really should look into what working conditions were like in the start of the industrial age, or in the early parts of the 20th century. The coal miner's of west virginia's working conditions were so bad they literally went to war with their employers.

Plus the literal slavery that went on for the majority of human history...

I am well aware of what working conditions were like in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and we're heading back to that slowly today. It's part of the reason labor unions were created to combat abuse by employers such as child labor, etc.

Unions get a bad rep and some of it is indeed deserved but let's be honest, if not for unions, there would be no paid vacations, workplace safety rules, and regs, no benefits, etc so unions played a huge role in combating some of the wrongdoing.

All of which is complete bullshit. If any of that were true, jobs wouldn't constantly go to nations that actually have weak laws regarding labor.

Low paying jobs yes. Take a good look around this country and tell me you see people thriving. Sure some maybe but there are more homeless in America arguably than there were during the Great Depression.
