SMS isnt the best Mario game by far, but it was still a good time. Getting all the stars was a bit too much busy work because of all the red coins and the final boss was a bit lackluster even in a series known for lackluster final battles, but the fludd was a fun one off gadget and the tropical theme was a good twist from the usual grass/ice/lava/castle bit. Dont regret playing it at all.

edit; lol we both said the fludd was cool and the unique setting was great yeah I dig his enthusiasm. Not the best Mario game is pretty paper thin criticism for a generally great platformer series. I genuinely dont think theres an actually bad Mario platformer. The worse Ive ever felt was been there done that from nsmb wii (tho that rocks in multi where bouncing off each other is hella hilarious)

Dunkey gets it completely right here imo. Fun game, excellent soundtrack (Ricco Harbor goes hard). The main thing that sucks about the game is all the blue coin collecting and thats why its the only 3D Mario I havent completed 100% (aside from 3D World, which i havent played)

i agree. i don't know when this happened, but fans of mario sunshine, the prequel star wars movies, ff13 seem to just spawn out of nothingness

In the case of FF and Star Wars, apologists show up because of new entries sucking for generally the opposite reasons the old ones sucked. "At least the old entry had ______, which the new entry did a shit job of!"

In the case of Mario, it's just that even the worst mainline Mario is still very good compared to the competition. There's nothing really to apologize for.

If you're comparing it to pure platforms of it's generation, there's nothing else that even comes kind of close to being almost as good as Sunshine. That's pretty impressive to me.

If you wanna include it next to stuff like Ratchet and Clank, then that's a different discussion.

Not a lot. Jak & Daxter 1, Sly Cooper and Psychonauts are probably the best games of the genre that generation, all of which are obviously excellent games, but in terms of actual platforming mechanics are not remotely on par.

The same could be said of Ratchet & Clank's sequels, though I would call those shooters before I called them platformers.

I consider all of these games better packages than Sunshine, to be clear. Better games period. But Sunshine is the best regarding the actual platforming mechanics.
