I currently have a i5 3.3ghz and a gtx 960 which are probably a little underpowered for what 2077 will be bringing to the table, but I also don't really want to get it for ps4 or wait for the ps5 so it seems like I'll have to upgrade my PC. But I don't really know how to go about the process. How do I know what processors/gpus will be compatible with my motherboard? Would it be best to just start from scratch and build something all new? I have 16 gb of ram but it's DDR3, do I have to go to DDR4 if I'm going to be upgrading everything else?

Motherboard: Asus Z87-Pro
CPU: i5-4590 3.30ghz
GPU: Nvidia GTX 960
RAM: 16GB DDR3

Intel has been using the i5 designation for 10 years, that doesn't give enough information.

In the windows search bar, type dxdiag and it will show your exact processor model, which will reveal its age and what is compatible with your motherboard.

I don't know enough to help beyond that, but I know that information will be needed to give a better assessment.

You're probably going to need a complete rebuild tbh.

There's not much room for upgrades on your current mobo. Mainly this is because it's using Intel's LGA 1150 CPU socket, which has been succeeded twice. Upgrading to a new board means your RAM can no longer be used as the new standard is DD4. Finally, the GTX 960 is a bit underpowered for modern titles even for 1080p gaming if you want to be hitting a stable 60 fps.

That being said, I (and I'm sure others on the board) could help provide guidance for new components if you have some parameters in mind: estimated budget, usage case (strictly gaming vs. gaming + work), etc.

Actually, you know what? If you only care about 1080p gaming, you could probably just go with a GPU upgrade for now. Your current processor probably won't bottleneck a GPU that can better handle modern 1080p performance.

I'd look into getting like a GTX 1650 Super if your budget allows. Again, this is all assuming you have a 1080p monitor.

Yeah I have a acer predator xb241h. 144hz and has gsync enabled through DP

I have been researching all day though and pretty much came to the same conclusion that I would have to do a full rebuild at this point. This is what I've put together so far, trying to stay around 1k. let me know what you think:

Yeah, with a 144Hz monitor you absolutely want a rebuild.

Your part list looks good to me. My only recommendation would be bumping your RAM to 3200 CL16 instead. Ryzen systems in particular love faster RAM.

So something like that? It's about the same price as what I had picked out before.

Yep, that's perfect. Don't forget to enable A-XMP (could be called DOCP instead) in your BIOS to make sure it's running at the advertised speed.

Would this work too? It looks pretty much the same specs wise but it had way more reviews so I trust it a bit better, the top review on the one I linked before said it caused him memory corruption issues.

At the bottom in the comparison it says the RAM memory technology is "DDR3 2133, DDR3 2133" even though everything else on the page says DDR4 so I'm a bit worried

I did a build very similar to this last year and its been great, even at some resolutions higher than 1080p. My processor is even a bit slower, I only got a Ryzen 5. The Ryzen processors can be a little finicky about ram, but as was already said you can always go into the BIOS and adjust speeds if you need to.

You're good using that RAM instead. Amazon's specs at the bottom are screwed up - it's definitely DDR4. FWIW I also trust Corsair more than PNY.
