Seems to be they tried to hard to capture the "so bad it's good" feel of the origin. But that is not something that can be faked.

My theory is that they were developing it as a multiplat game until Nintendo moneyhatted them and they couldn't figure out how to get the game to work in an acceptable fashion even with their focus on it.
