To put it into simple terms, if we go by the popular vote, then what happens is the few states with highest populations of people (California, Texas, New York, etc.) will be making the decisions on how the entire country lives. Smaller states like Delaware, Rhode Island, Idaho, Nebraska, etc, would basically have no say so in anything. And that can lead to riots, protests, and possibly revolution.

Smaller states should have basically no say. Who gives a fuck what the 5 people who live in Wyoming think? Why should they get as many senators as California?

Well it should be based on the population in general. It's not California's fault no one wants to live in Nebraska.

Not over the rest of the country, but we have to let their votes count too. How would you feel if you were liberal and someone forced you to vote republican or if you were republican and someone forced you to vote liberal? We have to give everyone a chance to be heard for that reason.

The EC gave us two terms of Bush Jr. (if he hadn't won the first time he wouldn't have won the second) and a Trump term, so we'd be better off without it.

Off topic I know, I won't get started on that. Just a joke.

Article 2 and the 12th amendment don't even specify a popular vote. The closest there is would be a very loose interpretation of the 24th amendment.

This is effectively how the system works already. If you're a blue-leaning individual and the majority of your state votes red, your representative vote is red. Same thing if you're a red-leaning individual and the majority vote in your state is blue.

this of course assumes that those states have half the population of the country in them (they don't) and that everyone in them would vote uniformly (they wouldn't)

Smaller states get congressmen, senators, and governors. They get an appropriate amount of representation.

The electoral college is dumb.

popular vote should win it period. States aren't monolithic voting blocks, and we're past the days where people identified more with their states than with their country. That someone can win despite fewer people voting for them is fucking stupid. That is not how democracy should work.

Electoral college means that politicians focus on swing states, not small states.

Electoral college, or at least the winner take all aspect of it, means that people who don't vote with their state basically get their vote thrown out.
