Then they should specify it as part of the criteria yet they deliberately omit it and when it's brought up they say it's below all listed criteria.

Not saying Cinci should be Top 4 end of year but based on what has happened so far they have probably the 3rd best resume. Like outside of OSU who has Oregon played that is better than Cinci's schedule? It's pretty much a wash. Likewise with Ohio State, outside the Oregon loss and Penn State win who have we played better than Cinci has? Again it's a wash. Even Alabama only has 1 ranked win on their schedule.

If you have a loss on your record then the rest of your results better damn well be significantly better than an undefeated teams resume. Yet all the above have the same number of ranked wins at Cinci with only 1 of them having a better ranked win and yet all have more losses.

Edit: Actually a wash is probably harsh. Their schedules are slightly better than Cinci's but not significantly so that their loss should be overlooked given Cinci's ND win. Like there's no other standout win on any of their schedules or a team where you would think 'They would trouble Cinci'.

I mean they openly say it's not a factor but how can it not be? You're trying to establish who the best four teams are, and there's a big difference between Alabama beating Mississippi State by 40 and OU narrowly beating Tulane and Kansas

ShatteredElysium posted...
Even Alabama only has 1 ranked win on their schedule.

technically they have two counting the CFP rankings since they have Mississippi State in the top 25

Then if it's a factor Michigan State should not be at 3 because they have looked like crap against bad teams all season and are only being propped up by their win last weekend. And that's the problem, they don't apply their criteria with any sort of consistency.

Ohio State smacking the shit out of everyone since their 1 possession loss to the 4 ranked team puts them 5th. Alabama smacking the shit out of everyone with a loss to the 14 ranked team puts them 2nd.

Michigan State looking like crap but being undefeated with a close top 10 win at home puts them 3. Cincinnati looking better with a larger margin of victory top 10 win on the road puts them 6.

Where's the consistency? If Bama are above MSU then OSU should be too. If MSU are 3rd based on their resume then Cincinnati should be tied with them or above them. They don't apply the criteria consistently across the board.

oh yeah, they absolutely don't, and it's been a problem since the first year when they decided to drop TCU from 3rd to out of the playoffs in the final rankings

I guess technically Cincinnati still have a simplistic path in but it really depends on how much faith you have in the committee putting them above a 2 loss Alabama.

MSU/OSU sorts itself out on the field and the loser will drop below them. So theoretically an Alabama loss to Georgia puts Cinci 4th. But that also relies on them not being leapfrogged by Oklahoma or OK State if either wins out and let's be honest, they probably would be since in that scenario both would pick up 2 or 3 ranked wins in doing so. Cinci can potentially pick up 1 if Houston gets ranked by championship time.

Also just looked at the bottom end of the rankings. Some of those look so bad and like they are only there to prop up schedules. And it feels like Houston and SMU being left off whilst lesser P5 teams get in is just another way for them to have wiggle room to say 'who did Cinci beat?'

An Oregon loss helps them out, too, because it means the Pac-12 is effectively eliminated from the playoff picture, and that doesn't feel unlikely based on how they've played lately.

also you could get a weird A > B > C > A scenario if Ohio State beats Michigan State and Michigan beats Ohio State (lawl), which I think would help Cincinnati simply by getting Ohio State out of the picture

but I also think they might be desperate enough for Michigan to be relevant again that it might get them in if they win the Big Ten in that scenario

I'd have to look at the tiebreakers but I think in that scenario MSU makes the title game? They would have a 3 way tie with 1 loss each in the Big Ten. I think 2 loss OSU would be eliminated first based on total losses and then MSU would eliminate Michigan based on H2H?

Fleck getting paid almost $35 mil to stay in Minnesota until 2028. The program has been better under him, but that is a lot of money and a lot of years for a prior I'm still not convinced is ever good enough to be a great one. Maybe he's the guy to do it though. Never hurts to have consistency. Better him than Tim Brewster...or whatever that guy's name was. Took Mason's players and then set fire to the program.

Are the P5 conference champions guaranteed a NY6 game? With the Orange Bowl being a playoff game this year, is there the possibility that the ACC doesn't get a rep in the NY6 game or is a NY6 bowl forced to take them regardless of rank?

Eh, I think if Ohio State wins out they will definitely get in. I mean I guess there's the scenario where Alabama beat Georgia and Oklahoma win out resulting in like Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma and Oregon? But that's the only scenario I foresee them getting left out and even then they might give them the nudge over Oklahoma or Oregon depending on where MSU and Michigan are in the rankings

I think Georgia smacks the shit out of everyone this year though.
