For the record I have no problem with Dels not liking the story but still liking the gameplay.

Doesn't change how wrong he is though!

And actually, I'm going to completely shit all over my own priorities here using another recent and extremely popular exanple: Hades. I love everything about that games story and characters. I was thoroughly engaged. Nothing is a higher priority for me.

But BOY do I hate playing that game, and as much as I want to continue and be engaged my the narrative, it's just way to difficult for me to keep myself invested.

and that it was a good example to prove my point of enjoying gameplay without story =P

also i did say i like Emet-Selch! i'd say one of the best villains, or just characters, from an RPG for sure.

well, hate is different than, uh, apathy.

like, if instead of it's gameplay, it was a bunch of turn-based random encounters where you could mostly win them all by just mashing A for attack, would that be better?

because that's what some JRPGs are like

Honestly...yes. The bane of existence for me is run based games, but them being passive rather than active makes it a lot more tolerable for me. Thus why Slay the Spire works for me but Hades doesn't.

Can anyone fill me in on what black magic they unlocked with cutscene animation starting in 5.3? I don't know if they developed a new fork of the engine or untangled some spaghetti code but it's kind of adorable seeing all the really obvious "look what we can do!" stuff like characters pouring drinks, eating and Alisae's... emoting, lol. If this is a preview of what EW's direction will be like I'm super excited.

Most cutscenes rely on canned animations reused between multiple characters and situations, a lot of which are actually just emotes the player can also use if they're the correct race/gender combination. For the specific cutscene you're referring to they had mocap artists record animations specifically for that scene. It looks much better but it's also much more expensive, so I wouldn't expect to get that quality of work for every single cutscene going forward. There was a ton of internet praise for that cutscene in particular though, so I suspect the team will put a similar amount of work into some of the most pivotal scenes in EW.

Well even outside of the mocap there was a pretty clear tech leap for stuff like the sweat on the Werlyt villain doing pushups, him pouring a glass of milk WITH LIQUID PHYSICS and some few other things that really stood out.

My expansion plans always turn into not being able to sleep and then crashing in the middle of the day before going for round 2 in the afternoon/evening.

It's not a good strat, but it's the one that works for me.

I know most of you play PC, but when should I expect the actually CLIENT to update?

Just want to make sure I'm not going to find my PS5 having to install an update when 4 comes around.

The preload will be available during maintenance. For normal patches this is usually just a few hours before it goes live. I am pretty sure it goes live earlier for expansions but I don't recall exactly when. I don't think there's a set time.

I'm not sure if the PS5 downloads in background, PS4 kind of did when I swapped over but it wasn't reliable. I would just make sure to update manually once we find out it's live.

PS5 will update as long as you've closed out the game. If it's still running in the background I think it'll download but won't install until you close.

I should probably try to run through what I left of Shadow of Mhach before maint tomorrow.

I feel like if I don't get it done tomorrow it could be some time before I get it done because I don't think that many people are gonna be running Alliance Raids during like the first week or so of Endwalker.

But I could be wrong and people who haven't reached Endwalker yet are still running them.

Alliance Roulette is basically Leveling Roulette 2, and it'll be handing out new materia. People will absolutely be running it.

Well if they follow the same model they've been using, we should get materia at the same rate but it's more scarce in that it'll take some time to build up as opposed to everyone already having massive piles of the stuff.

Hunt trains will probably take a week or two to get figured out but I'm sure they'll be back.

I wouldn't say scarce per say but it does take some time to get the new ones for most because people don't know the new hunt timings or even how to spawn the S ranks and such to get the hunt trains going.

Trains will be up and running relatively quickly, but they will be slow as molasses and they'll want to run all three instances in a row

Now that I think about it, IIRC by the time raids actually launched in Shadowbringers there was plenty of materia to go around. I don't even think there was a big price spike or anything. Only raiders buy in bulk and causal players offload extras. So it's less that materia will be scarce and more that prices will be the highest they'll get. At any rate there's a few weeks to build up a healthy supply and save some gil before the gear worth using it on drops.

It just means they are going back and putting the coffer system of ShB Savage/Extremes on past expansions.

Every Extreme I've solo'd for Wondrous Trails up to this point has dropped a random weapon, not a coffer.

I edited for clarity, but right. 5.x weapon drops work this way too, at least up until Emerald which I know I had to farm.

In Savage you get the random weapon and coffer in addition to the trade-in tokens which is how everything should be so it's a great change to make going forward. I'm hoping this means new extremes have it too.

Yes, but they're adding a new super echo to undersized queuing that will bring it in line with what it would have been before.

Not quite - still have to do 5.55 and the last Nier raid.

I did the Diamond Weapon fight after I last mentioned Werlyt - this section was excellent. I liked the Gaius stuff a lot, and the memory stuff. Kinda reminded me of the Omega raid ending in a way, which is a good thing.

Also did Eden's Promise. This was nice, but I'm not sure how excited I was about giving Gaia an old boyfriend...

Paglth'an was awesome, one of the best dungeons in the game. Excellent music and bosses. 5.5 was good stuff in general, since Estinien and Tiamat are cool. 5.4 was less exciting. Some good character interactions, but the plot of it wasn't that interesting.
