Google happened.

YouTube went to shit in 2007 when Google bought it. There was a brief period in the early 2010s where a good balance was reached but it didn't last long.

The reason we hate these sites so much, is that they are a reflection. Its more than just ads or the way they mistreat people.

Only time I've ever been a Democrat is to vote in the primaries some years, and then quickly change back to Unaffiliated once I'm done.
If we had ranked choice voting, I wouldn't even do that.

I mean, they might as well remove the like counter. Without the dislikes, the like counter is useless. So, just having a like/dislike buttons without numbers makes more sense than being able to see likes, but not dislikes. Because the point is to compare them

As for comments, they can already disable them if hey want. Though, many creators leave them on as a way to talk to viewers since many viewers may not have accounts on other social media. Or they may use those accounts for different things

They won't. Because likes are useful for propaganda purposes, especially when they can be artificially inflated. Companies like likes.

Comments can already be disabled, and will likely continue to be disabled on deliberate marketing videos (in the same way Reddit prevents people from commenting on ad posts). Because the last thing companies want is tons and tons of people crapping on their product in the comments. Unless they're willing to moderate their own comments... in which case they'll just delete all the comments crapping on their product, and leave the positive ones (some of which they probably posted themselves via paid shill accounts) to make their video look far better received than it actually was.

Make no mistake, nearly every policy decision or feature YouTube makes is mostly to appeal to larger corporations and how they can use YouTube as an advertising platform. Google doesn't give a shit about the actual content, and even less of a shit about content creators.

While this is true, does it really help if you cant see the dislikes? Especially since you cant always tell whats a lot and whats not without the comparison.

I ask because when I look at certain content creators, I sometimes look at their old videos. While their old videos have much less like then the newer stuff, its still always much higher than the dislikes. So, even though those videos did well, they look like they did poorly when checking the likes vs their new stuff Thats why Im wondering if having just likes really helps them at all Because with just likes, I cant really tell if the video will be good or bad before watching

Absolutely, yes. Because it creates the artificial impression that something is more popular than it actually is. Which is the entire reason why they'll keep it.

Does it help you accurately gauge what is worth your time and what isn't, or what is quality versus crap? No, it's useless for that. But again, YouTube doesn't give a fuck about you. They don't give a fuck whether or not you can use the system to actually find worthwhile content. Because that is no longer the point of the service.

The like counter will continue to exist to give you the impression that the videos they present to you are popular, trendy, and that your peers like them (and you want to be like your peers, don't you?) - and you will lap them up like the good little sheep you are. Because that is the sole purpose of your existence in their eyes. Having free will and voicing opinions is incredibly inconvenient for them, because it makes the corporate sponsors sad.

This is an ongoing problem, and something a lot of larger content creators on YouTube have been complaining about almost since Google took over - the site caters to advertisers over uses (both viewers and performers), to the detriment of the quality of the content. Because the sole purpose of the site now is to generate revenue for Google, and Google gave up on their "Don't be evil" philosophy a looong time ago.

It's why a lot of former big-time YouTubers are migrating to Twitch more and more (though Twitch isn't all that much better right now) or leaning more and more heavily into Patreon or in-video ad reads. Because they basically need to to survive as professional content creators. The platform is constantly screwing them over in myriad ways.

But that's the thing. Will most people actually believe it's popular based on the likes with nothing to compare them to? Depending on hoe popular the content creators they like are, it's might still seem unappealing if the likes don't reach those high amounts that content creator they like reach... Like if they like someone who regularly get 200K likes on their video that has 1,000,000 views, then a video with 10,000,000 views and 100K likes might seem shitty...

Precisely my thoughts. If clicking on the button does not increment any visible counter of any sort, then why include it at all? Though, I presume the YouTube lot must still collect and sell data, I suppose. Even so, I assume most of the YouTube userbase uses the like-dislike feature of the video database website mostly because they want their opinion on a given video to be heard, without expending much effort. If this assumption is correct, then I foresee the dislike button disappearing sometime in the future, because the removal of the visible dislike-counter negates most of the point in clicking on the button in question.

And they claim it's for the sake of the mental health of content creators or whatever... But the dislikes aren't actually going away, they're becoming "private", so the general populace can't see the number. So, the only one who CAN still see it... is the content creator himself/herself. Riiiiiight...
