I thought there was something that came out a couple years after the series ended that amended all the power rankings with a new system that is actually "canon"

They're not canon at all - Lanfear's explicitly stated in the books to be stronger than all the Forsaken other than Ishamael, while this chart has her as weaker than all the male Forsaken (and also Narishma lol).
Legend had it that Lanfear was stronger than all of the Forsaken other than Ishamael

How does this scale work?
lower numbers are better. Think of the ++ numbers as negative, breaking the scale set by female Aes Sedai

The Companion's self-contradictory too - it says Nicola and Cadsuane have the same strength in one entry, for example, while they're ranked differently on the chart. There's a whole bunch of other stuff in there that contradicts the books. It seems like they were based on some of Jordan's notes, which he wrote before writing the actual books.

Episode 6 was a big hmmmm from me. Some book comparisons but nothing spoilery:

  • I enjoyed the Aes Sedai drama and interactions. I feel like they've done a good job with this for the most part.
  • How exactly did Moiraine get to Siuan? I can't imagine it's Traveling but would have liked an explanation or at least a throwaway comment. Were they in Siuan's quarters or back someplace in Tear?
  • In the books any Moiraine/Siuan relationship was more implied than anything else. Not a big deal but I wonder if they'll still go in the book's direction with Thom. I'm guessing not.
  • They really took some liberties with the Waygate. I thought it was actually in Tar Valon but that's not a big deal. What IS a big deal is that they changed how they work! It's supposed to be moving a leaf that opens it, not the damn One Power.
  • What was the deal with Rand "seeing" the sickness come out of Mat? Did he see the weaves too?
  • What was the deal with Moiraine (or anyone else) not recognizing Nynaeve's strength? They're supposed to be able to "feel" another channelers strength just by being close to them.
Not sure anyone else is still watching...

honestly, as far as random changes go, i 100% buy that moiraine or siuan found a ter'angreal lying around the tower's storerooms that lets you teleport between two nearby locations and decided to use it to make it easier to scheme

yeah this could cause issues down the line, and also makes no damn fucking sense because the gates were created for Ogier who can't channel! and obviously they're made for the ogier still because they need loial for a guide

you can see mashadar's mists. makes sense that you could see a manifestation of its evil. no reason to think rand saw the weaves; even book 1 rand could put two and two together

Yeah, as a book reader, that was the most logical explanation. I'm guessing maybe they just didn't have the time/inclination to explain ter'angreal at this point in the show.

yeah this could cause issues down the line, and also makes no damn fucking sense because the gates were created for Ogier who can't channel! and obviously they're made for the ogier still because they need loial for a guide

I wasn't sure the show said the reason why they need Loial there. I forgot myself exactly what the reason was in the books. I was also thinking about at what point in the books did Moiraine know/realize there's a Waygate in the Two Rivers. You would think she would have put 2 and 2 together by this point in the show, even if she didn't understand how that could be possible.

Okay, sure. I'll take that as an explanation.

Has anyone else watched the "Behind the Episode" clips or the "WoT Origins" animations. The Origins animations are pretty damn cool but they feel so different in tone than the actual TV series. To the point it almost makes me wish we got the series in that style...

I thought this episode was mostly good, and almost everything that happened here could've happened offscreen in the books, but I'm sad they're cutting so much book content.

It's pretty explicit in the books too! They're definitely called pillow friends at one point, which is Aes Sedai code for lesbian lovers. This is one of the changes I expected them to make for the show - keep them lovers and not have them end up with guys later on.

I always thought the term "pillow friends" left just enough ambiguity that it implied more than anything else. Of course it always made sense there would lesbian relationships in an entirely female organization filled with powerful, driven women. I don't think all the supposed "pillow friends" were lovers though. It think it was also used as a somewhat disparaging term for women in the Tower who kept close confidence with one another.

But also I mean it in the sense that there were no explicit sex scenes between them. Although I read recently that there was a point where they kissed in New Spring? Jordan though, as far as I remember, never really got graphic with any of the relationships in the series; he was more of a "kissing and then fade scene out" kind of writer.

Also I'm holding off on watching the show until Season 1 is out (in full) and I hear if they botched it. No need to go through that heartbreak if it turns out to screw things up.

Hell yeah was that great!

  • I have no idea how I pictured the Ways in my head anymore but I thought they did a decent enough job.
  • Still not cool with the channeling to open the gates thing, which STILL makes no damn sense considering Moiraine needed to channel to open the exit gate.
  • MIN!
  • Finally no more "mystery" of who the DR is!
  • I have no idea how I pictured the Blight in my head anymore but it looked pretty fucking cool (and terrifying).

I pictured the Blight as Terraria Crimson and they gave us Terraria Corruption so I guess that's fine

I understand if the showrunners want to streamline Lan and Nynaeve's relationship (I like the idea but like most relationships, it wasn't written that smoothly), but it also seems like they're getting rid of his whole death ideation thing, which is a big part of his character and especially strange how much New Spring they're including

The actress who plays Min is waaaay too old for the role. Min is supposed to be around Rand's age, not in her mid thirties.

Also,

Why would anyone (including herself) think that Egwene was the one used the one power on the trolloc? Women cannot see male weaves, and nobody finds it odd that they cant see Egwene channel, not even Moiraine.

they weren't looking, and egwene is new enough at channeling she does it on accident and doesn't realize what she did most of the time (eg, every time rand channels)

Makes me think they are going to remove her as a love interest. I already went in kind of doubting they would go through with Rand ending up with all three of them. Now it can be a simple love triangle and they can take their time deciding which of the two he will end up with.

min is best girl (and believe me, I will never mean in a waifu sense when I say things like that), but if they made their relationship aromantic and left them as close friends and confidantes, that'd be fine. though hopefully if they did that aviendha would've killed elayne in a duel or elayne would've tripped over her shoes and fell off a building or something

Finally got around to the finale..and oooooooooh boy...

Here's some thoughts on the episode:
  • A sa'angreal, really? I'm pretty sure he does get the little fat man figurine later on in the books, I guess.
  • Pretty sure LTT is never referred to as the Dragon Reborn, just the Dragon. Also that's not the dragon symbol from the books...
  • Pretty sure they didn't know about the Dark One until AFTER their failed experiment (aka The Bore). Before that they just sensed "something".
  • They mentioned in the behind the scenes that the man at the Eye was a Forsaken but make no mention in the actual show.
  • Some of the scenes with Ishamael and Rand were kinda neat, I guess.
  • Did that scene of Rand giving up his life with Egwene happen in the books at any point? Pretty sure the opposite happens to Egwene when she goes through the Rings, though that might have just been Nynaeve.
  • Did Egwene bring Nynaeve back from the dead?!?
  • The whole linking in general was not great. Maybe Egwene can channel somewhat on demand but Nynaeve has never been shown to be in control of when she channels. Also, the FUCK with just the 5 of them standing out there and killing every fucking Trolloc and Fade.
  • Guessed it was going to be the Horn before they brought it out.
  • I guess Loial is dead? Death by budget...
  • Perrin seemed completely unafraid of the Fades...
  • I wasn't really expecting it but this clinches that that Aelfinn/Eelfinn/Tower of Ghengi stuff isn't going to happen.
  • Seanchan! Yay...maybe?

I'm probably missing some other big things. I've tried taken a moment to breathe because it's quite a departure from the books. You watch the behind the scenes for the episode and, it kinda helps a bit, but it's still tough as a book reader. The broader point is it's an adaptation and they needed to change things up for dramatic/budget/whatever reasons. The books are still the books and I can try to still enjoy the TV series.

Going to be fun to dive into what the WoT subreddit thought about this, lol. I can almost guarantee a super negative "done with this series" reaction.

The good news for new readers is they won't have years between books, which very likely helps with that slog quite a bit.

I remember re-reading all the books each time a new one came out. When you super excited and then you get Book 8 and then Book 9 and then Book 10, well, it really sucked.
