It was an early console game I remember renting as a kid and it the difficulty was way too high IMO. The final boss was Scar and you had to wait for him to charge you and then backflip him off the cliff, that was the only way to beat him

Shit was hard. Anyone remember playing that?

Furthest I got was Hakuna Matata.

I finished the recent re-release without save states but that was only immediately after a playthrough with save states so I knew all of the areas designed to chew through lives lol

Yeah I used to play it all the time. I could never beat it, only my older brother did. The game was hard. Good memories.

Like, it was specifically made super difficult so you couldn't beat it with a single rental.

Yup thats exactly why. It was the age of renting console games at Blockbuster (or Movie Gallery where I was from)

I never had it, my uncle did. The first couple of levels were fun and then it turned into impossible mode. Kinda want to play it now as I'm older to see if I could beat it now

I rented it and I used a game genie to get through it

However I still never finished the final battle. Even immortal, I couldn't for some reason pull off the kill. I remember understanding I needed to yeet him but I couldn't figure out how to do it and this was before I had internet so I couldn't look it up

I know that one of the Ninja Gaiden NES games did that too. I think it was Ninja Gaiden 3

The Japanese version was normal difficulty

They made it harder for the western release because in Japan they have never allowed legal video game rentals. It just isn't a thing there. Want to play it, have to buy it

They were irritated by western game rentals so they made it too hard to beat on a weekend to try to force people to buy it

Mickey Mousecapades also had a ridiculous difficulty hike from level 1 to 2, I remember just from watching that Game Grumps snippet lol

The Lion King Nes game removed all adult Simba levels.
Funny thing is that the back of the box advertised the removed levels.

You collect extra lives and Continues. And sometimes in one of the bonus stages, Pumba drops buffs for you -- HP buff, Roar power buff, etc -- but it's very rare
