As a kid I always thought Megatron was underwhelming. You've got dinosaurs and fighter jets and Soundwave and then over here you've got the guy that can turn into a common sidearm that everyone else already carries.

Hell he has a goddam gun on his robot mode's arm why does he need to transform at all? >_>

When Hasbro licensed figures from Takara they chose several from their Diaclone line, and others from Micro Change. Among those included various mini cars that would go on to become Bumblebee, Cliffjumper, Brawn, Gears, etc. Cassette Man and three Cassette Robo figures which became Soundwave, etc, and more.

There were four transforming guns. A Browning M1910, Smith & Wesson Magnum 44, Walther P-38, and a Walther P-38 U.N.C.L.E. The Walther was chosen and would later become Megatron. The Browning was later used in Masterforce as... well, Browning. A tiny Decepticon partner for Cancer. He was mostly used for comic relief.

Wait what, Transformers are reused from some earlier Japanese show like Power Rangers?

Back in the early 80s there were a number of transforming toylines in Japan and Korea. US toy company Tonka headed over and talked with Bandai. They got the rights to license their Machine Robo toys for the west. At first they marketed them as is, and sales were poor. They changed the name to Machine Men, but much the same happened. Then they went a totally different direction and split the figures into two factions (Guardians and Renegades), appointed a figure to each as leader, gave them all new names, and developed a story tie-in with a comic. Thus the GoBots were born.

Meanwhile Hasbro saw what they were doing and headed east as well. They spoke with Takara to license their Diaclone and Micro Change lines, Bandai for their valkyrie jet, and ToyCo for their Astro Magnum. They teamed up with Marvel and split the figures into two factions (Autobots and Decepticons), leaders, new names, story and comic, etc. The Transformers were born.

Tonka then worked with Hanna-Barbera to produce a cartoon they titled Challenge of the GoBots. Hasbro continued to work with Marvel along with Sunbow and Toei (among other studios) to create their animated series. Challenge of the GoBots premiered on September 8, 1984 and The Transformers on September 17. Both began with a mini-series to test the waters, and then started up proper in October.

In 1991 Hasbro bought out Tonka and obtained the GoBots characters along with it. The G2 line from 1993 had a Go-Bots sub line. There was a figure simply named Gobots which was marketed in Europe, and since then there have been a number of figures sold through Transformers as an homage to GoBots, and some of the characters have appeared in the comics in some form as well.

Here's pics of the new Legacy Crasher which is starting to hit store shelves in some countries.

The gun was probably later deemed inappropriate for children. Megatron often takes the form of a cannon and has become a triple changer in many newer versions of the character as homage to his original form as a gun. Super realistic toy guns have fallen out of style in general, so it's just not as fun. In retrospect, Shockwave was in fact the better Transformer! So there's that

Team Shockwave, we won

Megatron is an especially overpowered Transformer. In this form, he is able to reroute all of his power into his cannon as the gun, which becomes powerful enough to fell essentially any regular Transformer or even put a Dinobot out of commission at least for awhile. He's walking artillery. All the good stuff from the OG Transformers movie in the Autobot City battle and hijacking Ironhide's ship were in the spirit of Megatron's super cannon technology.

^^ Perhaps, but the only time you ever see Megatron in gun form is completely OP actually play out is in the opening scene of Transformers: the Movie when Starscream uses him to fucking destroy a couple of Autobots.

Yeah the idea probably evolved over time as the show went on and kids played with the toys and all that. I kinda get the idea that Megatron was outclassed by Autobot City tech overall, and we see he picks up a regular blaster that's strong enough to kill Optimus Prime. I also recall the gun being able to float or hover in the air and fire itself briefly.

The movie was also super violent. The TV show usually only played around with straight-up scrapping a character like that. Didn't Megatron turning into a gun usually signal the Autobots to simply flee?

Also, Galvatron lol

The Movie sells the franchise tbh

I mean, Shockwave got to get away with being a lazer gun for years

Well, Shockwave is more visually distinctive as an alien blaster. I'm talking something more in line with like a NERF gun or something

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/6/9/AAbtL8AADtip.jpg

In fact Hasbro also owns the NERF license so I wouldn't be surprised if something like this exists or I'd be shocked if it didn't

I still see Shockwave and am not 100% sure this is better than a toy pistol, but it's really a great idea. Actually being able to shoot at my friends with a Megatron nerf gun could be a game changer. Might even be bad for business lol

The first Michael Bay movie has a really cool Megatron. It was obvious it was all downhill from there

Maybe Megatron should just disassemble into a bunch of smaller robots (including turrets, drones, armor, robot cats, etc) including a cannon form, and a tank form, and be more like a LEGO

Like an omni-changer: a dragon, a jet, a convoy, a monster, etc
